Deedy, forget the hog is that your daughter?
<
[/b]

Yeah, and that actually wasn't a very good picture of her. She hunts pretty good too.
<

[/b][/quote]

What's the dowry you are asking for her?
<

No, not for me for my son who got his good looks and brains from the Dad (moi). Graduated engineering in robotics from a premier exclusive Catholic school and was consistent dean lister. I always dream of having a hunting daughter. Mine shouted: "Ma, dad shot the easter bunny!" coming home Easter afternoon from FHL with a jack.

Back to the thread, impressive hog. Double wow
<
That's huge. Congratulations!

Carl they were factory Remington 100gr Core-Locts. I'll probably stick with the '06 when I'm specifically after hogs, but wouldn't hesitate to use the .243 if it was what I had with me.

Didn't get to hammer the squeeks or yotes. Most of our spare time was spent BS'ing with Deedy and Karin.

As MikeSoCo splained it, pick out a good tree that's real close before shooting a big boar.

Sorry guys.. been out dropping stuff off with with the butcher and taxidermist.
<

First and foremost I can't even find enough words to describe how knowledgable, dedicated and downright enthusiastic Deedy and Karin about hunting hogs...so we'll just leave it with CHICK GUIDES ROCK!
<

After setting up the hunt with Deedy the prior weekend, Scott and I met up early Sunday morning and took off the resort. We made a pitstop in Choalme and met WTPops so that Scott could transfer a euro mount to him. Again it was nice meeting you WT.

After lunch at the Parkfield cafe we started clicking off the miles to Brysons. We got there about 4:00pm met Deedy and we began discussing hogs and filling out the necessary paperwork.Deedy really impressed me with the way she can discuss business and make you feel like an old friend at the same time. When she non chalantly looked over and said What kind of hog would you like? Like I was ordering off a menu I was alittle taken aback, nobody knows hogs that well I was thinking so I said lets go after a big'un..in typical chick guide fashion she smiled and said I've got atleast four in the area currently and started pulling out game cam pictures for me to chose from
<
. Then she starts giving me stats about the hogs in the photos, like we won't see this one because he's currently only coming into the barley from 11:00pm- 3:00am etc.
<
<
somebody does her homework, nuff said. When she pulled out a picture of the big black n white spotted hog she posted above, that was it I had an instant obession..lets get him..and the evening hunt was on.
<

After camoing down and Karin doing a weapons check to make sure everything was safe we piled into Deedy's truck and took a short drive to the area where he had been last seen. Deedy spread out around the area with Karin taking the high ground, Scott taking a mid level vantage point and Deedy an I deciding we would stalking in close to a water hole he'd been using and set up an ambush site. We sat quietly for about an hour an half, sometimes whispering about this or that but stayed focused on the task at had.. Deedy got up to check over a small rise we were sitting under but left me with the caution he usually comes in about 8:45 according to the game cams and remember with these big ones any little thing will bust you and they'll either won't come out or just vanish into the brush the way they came.

The minutes started ticking off and it was just before dark when sure enough I heard the crack of a twig, and looked over to my right to see the butt of something big approching the water hole on the trail directly above it. I reach over bringing my rifle to bear on the area, when sure enough the big black and white hog was standing at the top of the water hole about 80 yards away! I'm trying to settle the stock the rest of the way into my shoulder and pick him up in the scope.. he's standing head on to me and his head looks huge in the scope.. he stopped just standing there for a second when his ears flipped up..he knew something was amiss..I didn't feel comfy with the shot angle he was at.. I started trying to level the crosshairs where the neck joins the chest,, gawd he's huge I'm thinking when I flip the safety off.. that was it, he had too much and took off on me. He was gone as fast as he came in
<
I'm up bouncing around trying to get another look at him but no luck Deedy must have heard me flipping around and quiety cussing because she came back, but by that time there wasn't enough time with darkness.. I found out later Scott saw the top of him as he made his escape through the bush, but that was it with him for the rest of the trip..

I obsivously don't like being busted but in this case it worked out, the hog I ended up with is fantasic, bigger than I would have ever dreamed of taking down.Scott detailed hunt above but just a few more details about him, we weighted him in at 330lbs, 260 lbs for the body and 71 lbs of guts..he was so big that we had to weigh the body and carcass seperately to get the weight. For Jesse, we measured his "girth" around the chest at 50". The butcher weighed him in at 164 lbs of meat, so the theroy that you get half the weight in the skinned out carrcass seems to hold true atleast in this case.

Oh well I gotta get one last foxtail out of my Rockports
<
so thank you again Deedy and Karin, you gave me a lifelong memory that I can't thank you both enough for

Thank you Chris & Scott for the great great great reviews and super great stories. . . Just for the record the hog weighed 331 right? Did you do some cuts off the hog or did you sausage him? He should be great eating, even as big as he was he smelled & looked great.

Thank you for not mentioning the mosquito bites- see, I did send you home with some "weekend in the woods" type of condition. Thank goodness it wasn't poison oak.
You are OK in that department right?
<
We wash with lots of Tecnu around here.

Here's Scott AKA "the surgeon". Great job on this hog- taxi man should be very pleased.

Here's one for you One Shot "quit screwing around and show us the teeth"

Irish, the archery is going to be very good here for you- the piggies are in some great archery areas in the barley field- you should have a lot of fun.

Augenmike&Switch&Crew- Can't wait to see you guys tomorrow- Man are we going to have fun- Legal daylight starts at 4:37, that means in the field and settled by 4:15. No sleep to Bryson that's for sure. Oh yeah, it was 103 degrees here today. Just about right for deer season around here.
<

No moon though
<
so we should have a great hunt. And Karin can't wait to shoot the 17's again.

Beastslayer- My daughter is flattered. You and Lurediver have her blushing (gawd, she's gonna kill me when she reads this). It's pretty cute though-

Jesse- once again
<
thanks for the great website to play on - You coming for fall turkey season? To everyone else that we've hunted with and those we hope to meet - thank you for all the great support and kind words
<
You guys rock.

<
I thought those were birds they were so big
<
I'm good on the poison oak though. Tecnu rules!

Chris and I were on the phone tonight plotting a return trip.....after all, we do need to return your ice chest ASAP. Right? Even my wife is talking about coming up to do some fishing this summer.

Deedy gave me a quick tour of that archery spot and it's going to be sweet. Especially with the plans she has in the works for it. A still hunter's dream.

Shoes?
Tony dont need no stinkin shoes!
Whats that supposed to mean?
I dont get the joke!
somebody fill me in!
I enjoy a good laugh just like the next guy!

This morning 6:15 a.m. My two sons and I are launching our boat at Moss landing going out to try for some bbq king salmon. And this guy is walking backwards down the dock as were launching and hes talking to me . So I ask him politely to grab my bow line when I toss it to him. He does and he continues walking backwards right off the end of the dock! hes under for like 4 seconds, Im thinking what the hell do I have to jump in and pull him up? But he pops up spewing stank backwater and says. "that really helped I needed to wake up". It was like sometyhing out of a Rodney Dangerfield movie. Since we managed only one bite and no fish all morning I need a good laugh.

Tony got any dancing shoes?

Franklin3 -LD might need dancing shoes if that hamstring ever heals up.
<

Sounds like the guy that went off the dock had a pretty good sense of humor too.
Sorry about the fish not biting- if it makes you feel any better- the hogs went nocturnal on us last night. We hunted till 8:52 PM last night- as we were leaving the field at 9:15 PM - here the piggies came- big ones, little ones, medium ones. And a lotta ones too-
We gazed longingly.
<

But man, we had a blast.

I'm waiting at the welcome gate. Tell your wife we have those big striper bass 25-35 lbs. My friends catch 'em on anchovies all the time in San Antonio Lake. Good largemouth & smallmouth population here too. Oh yeah, and I just can't live without my ice chest.
<
just kidding.

Hey, how many acres of Barley do you have?[/b]

It's so cool- pulls the pigs from miles away cause it's the only source of food. I think it's 400 total acres of barley (we planted oats this year in reality but we still call it the barley field from habit)- that's just the barley acreage # though. The barley field is approx 1.5 miles long if that helps at all. Then there is all the surrounding acreage of piggie beds on the top, middle and bottom .... with a LOT of water. A whole lake of it. Why? Are you plotting something I should know about?
