Went out on the W/E with a couple of mate so we could top off the freezers and thin out our deer a little. I hunt a place where there is great potential for trophy deer (and we see some beauties each year) but a local deer farm released a strain of deer known for their weight and not for their antlers and we have been getting rid of them ever since.
Here is a pic of the difference in sizes. The one on the left is a menil fallow (dama dama) and the one on the right is offspring from the bigger strain (dama dama x mesopotamia), both deer are the same age....
Saturday evening was a long one, I shot 4 deer during the day (and mal the kiwi shot 2) so we had a lot of work to do once we went around and collected them
The big guy lifted his head just as I pulled the trigger (I was using a browning lever in 7mm08, pretty long lock time) and he caught the projectile in the eye. You can see the exit out it's neck in the background.
I was sitting in a little hidey hole on Saturday having some morning tea and a mob of emus came over. They normally don't like people anywhere near them but they couldn't see me till they walked around me. I was a bit nervous that they would startle and have a go at me but it all worked out fine
