Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. I wasn't calling the hunter that. I would pay money to be in his shoes. I would love to have his job. I just can't see how they didn't know there was a hunt planned. Lack of communication, I doubt that. What's the difference in Bunny Hugger Tree Hugger or any other name? I'm all for saving the earth. We shouldn't be able to drive cars either. If that was the case. We have to put oil on the ground to pave a road. Hell we polute the air too. Where do you draw the line. They should let Boartracks hunt a week there and I'll bet he can get more done, and he's already getting paid. I was trying to gain a little intel from it.

And I'd imagine Boartracks, being on base for 15 years, could kill more hogs a day than he could. There is no way to make up for experience on that base. He knows where they are, when they're there and why. Again, I didn't want to make anyone mad just help everyone out this weekend.

If these feral animals are such nuisances, then why do the guides charge $500-750 for one pig?

I could have sworn that increasing our opportunity to fill a tag every once in a while was why we hang out at this site.

Well since I opened a can of worms, I got some more info. The dep hunter can only hunt in one area of base and its not even close to where the hogs have been, it is a area that is closed to hunting all the time anyway, off avery rd. I think I jumped the gun on my post. But still They should have waited til after the hunt. As for if he shot any pigs---NO he said they were all by the water, and he can not dep for them there.
So sorry that I caused a panic ,but I still think that hunters could help out with or hog problem with special hog hunts.
again THANKS

I worked with a guy in Monterey County who had a permiot to trapo nuisance pigs at Santa Cruz COunty ranch. He would get them in a corral, then lock it up and open up on them with buckshot. Then he would dress them and hang them in a tree for the DFG to come and pick up.

Could he keep any of the meat for himself. No (officially not, but I'll tell you that a 50 lb piggie basted ion a honey and smoked is a billiopn times tttsier than a big pig).

Could he take any meat in to process to take to a soup kitchen or food bank. No

Would DFG c ome out right away to get the pigs hanging in a tree so that they could take them in to salvage for a food bank. Hardly ever. Often a bunch of them would hang in a tree for a few days in 90-100 degree weather, not the best way to store pork.

All I know with that kind of depredation culling was that way mopre meat was wasted than maxe it into bellies of hungry people (offically that is)

This hired gun will take a few, but he'll also push them off that area and maybe in to the open areas on base. It could very well end up that there will be more pigs to shoot at this weekend. Sure as beats the honey-do's some of us have going.

As per contract with him he has to give ALL hogs shot to Camp Roberts base personel. I'm sorry about the waste of meat from the guy you know, thats sad. All of the hogs I've shot here I give to the mission san migeul or to units here on base on A.T.

If the hogs are being "donated" to shelters and orphanages or whatever, it is still considered to be marketed, and must adhere to USDA regs.
It may sound crazy and a huge waste, but think of the drawbacks too.

FWIW..
