Just wanted to see how many people have hunted near Gaviota State Beach, and if so any luck. I have seen a few pigs there once but never really hunted near the area.
There has been hogs in that area for years, I have even seen them inside the park. To bad no hunting there. I have heard of some guide service offering hunting on the ranches along HWY 1, which offers some great pig hunting.
The hogs are thick on almost all the ranches in the Santa Barbara area. Only problem is the ranches won't allow any hunting unless its with a guide or your family or something. There is hunting on Hollister ranch and good pig hunting at that. But, again you have to be very lucky to get on. Also there have been wild pigs in this area for as long as I can remember.
I was driving through the hollister ranch once, went around one corner and saw about five deer, we stopped in the road and seperated a baby from the rest and there was two nice 6 points. Went around the next corner and I see a black shape on the corner ahead of us. We sped up and got to the corner just in time to see about a 200 lb hog dash off into the mustard. I would do anything to go hunting in Hollister. We saw a nice mountain lion too.
Just got back last weekeend from hunting CoJo ranch right at point conception. Overlooking the bluffs. Great scenery, and an ecven better hunt. But it is guided, so if your looking for public land this is not the place. Was witha guide out of Santa Maria, went 3 for 3 all of us had a pig by 7:30 AM skiinned and on way home by 11:30. One of the guys had a 2-1/2 mile hike out of a stream bed after he made a questionable shot on a 150 lb sow that went over a cliff into teh bottom of a stream bed.
Here it goes, three of us that I shoot IHMSA silhouette with hooked up with Central Coast Outfitters, http://www.centralcoastoutfitters.net/ cost was $480.00 for a single day hunt, whcih went up to $660.00 as of 5-1-04. The trophy fee is $180.00 for any pig with tusks longer than 1-3/4" and an additional pig is $390.00
I think there are better deals out there.
Lots of sightings, what it really came down to which one do you want.
Good guides gave me multiple oppertunities
We got three of them this day, a small 75 lb, 150lb, 175lb.
The one that went off teh cliff into the rivine was hit in the backside by a .243 100 grain SP bullet that only traveled about 8", One of the other ones was hit with a
7x 57 mm and went about 10 yards, and mine was taken by a .260 140 grain Partition at 60 yards running away from me out of my Model 7. The first shot hit him high in the back and my rifle jammed upon trying to get another in the chamber, I dropped the floor plate on the magazine picked up a round out of the dirt and this time hit him in the head running away up a hill. This was my first pig and really surprised myself that I could shoot like that on a running animal from a standing position. I didn't think I could do that on paper let alone a live anaimal.
Also got to see a Blacktail fawn being born. Lots of blacktail on the 25,000 acre ranch and more quail here, then I've seen it my lifetime.
BTW: The sausage and pork chops from the boar last night were great
