Federal E-Stamp

I live abroad and will be back in CA for some hunting this coming weekend and, being lazy, haven't bought licenses yet. Apparently all the federal stamps are sold out near my hometown according to friends and was wondering if anyone here has had an experience with game wardens using the federal e-stamp. Anyone get rid of physical licenses and go all electronic?

Screenshot is from state regulations booklet buuuuuuut I've had to actually explain the "rules" to wardens before because they apparently had forgotten them (I'm a conservation biologist, I study this stuff for a living). Appreciate any info!

My grandson turned 16 late in the season and hadnt gotten the fed stamp when we went to a federal refuge. The lady at the check station told him how to get an e-fed stamp through another state's website (oklahoma I think). She would not let him in otherwise.
