FHL draw results have posted for the military side. My son drew a 448 tag as well as a J10. It's gonna be a fun season!

Good luck to everyone that applied or drew.

Thanks guys! Anyone else draw 448? I hunted it last year with my son, but this will be his first time doing the work.

Whats up guys. Im AD mil up in the Monterey area and drew a 449 tag for this year, good luck to you guys and congrats on your draw. Ill be posting another thread looking for any advice since I have never elk hunted FHL. I saw a few last year when I was out for A33 though, so hoping I can get on some this go around.

Good luck Rusky. I'm active duty as well, Navy. Pretty sweet deal being stationed in Monterey, I'm down in San Diego.
Feel free to PM me any questions you have. I don't know much about the 449 hunt, but I'm sure someone on here will. There's a lot of helpful guys on here with a wealth of knowledge.

Well 449 zones just posted for at least into next week thursday. Not too happy, same areas that have been getting archery deer are open and they do not appear to be the good training areas. Looks like the 13s and 7 are all that is open for now for 449. I have seen a few cows in 13E a while back but not much else. Anyone hunted those areas recently and want to share if you saw any elk in them? I was hoping they would open more south and east training areas but I think too many units are on FHL training now.

Sit the water tank in 13E. go in from the east side of the unit. there is a good size herd in there. All the areas that are open have elk in them. The bull in the 13E TA was bugling last weekend.

That herd waters on seep next to road across from tank range and at the tank on East side of 13E. Or they will be in flats next to jolon road.. lots of times you can hear bull bugling before day light and try and get in front of them. Or sit the water or tree stand. My dad had a tag last year. Last weekend he was there deer hunting and the herd came into tank and watered.

Good luck.

Looks like the 449 hunt went, how was it? Couldn't have been worse than the results from last year when the dates were in Oct right?

Hunt went well. I know at least three bulls were taken. I took a 5 x 5. The other guys I know tagged a 6 x 7 and a 6 x 6 I believe. Just need to make sure the good areas are opened up.

I was at FHL last weekend, and as of mid-day Saturday I had heard 8 of 12 tags were filled. Not sure what happened after that.

Wow, sounds pretty good! I thought there was only 8 tags though, not 12, but I could be wrong. Thanks

Quick update on the 448 hunt. As far as I know 2 of the 8 tags have been filled, both from 13W opening evening.
My son should have filled his opening morning, we had 2 opportunities in 13E, both under 60 yds. But between the nerves of it being the first time my son having big game in his scope and wanting to make a picture perfect target shot he didn't pull the trigger.

Now it seems the 13E herd has moved into 10 and has been pushed around a bit.

Hoping to figure something out tomorrow.

If they are in TA10 they will run up and down between Sulfur spring road and the border of 10 and 13w they will always stay close to Jolon road fence .if too much pressure they will cross to 13E. Also try the two canyons south of the cherry patch.
goodluck...

Julian thanks for the info, it helped out.
We checked out 20 all morning and didn't see a thing. We were on our way to the northern border of 10, but I saw your message and decided to try the 10 / 13W border.
After driving it for a while we came across the herd literally right on the side of the road, that spooked and took off north. We got out to see what direction and if they were still visible. We couldn't see them but got a general idea of which way they went.
On the way back to the truck we see another group of elk hunters, they apparently had been chasing the herd all morning, ended up shooting one with a 420yd shot, and were headed to the skin shack.
So we take our best guess at which roads will put us in a good area. As we start to go over a smaller steep hill all of a sudden I see antler tips over the road top 20 yards ahead of us and the herd slowly trots up to the next hill top about 100 yards away and stand there looking at us.
We slowly get out of the truck, open the camper shell, and grab my sons rifle and shooting sticks. Check on the herd...yep still there looking at us. He loads three rounds and we crouch down and slowly walk to a good shooting spot, as there was a lot of smaller oaks in the way. My son sets up and makes a perfect shot from 75yds with his .243. The cow walked 15yds to a small shady oak, lay down, and that was it. She dressed out at 292.5lbs.

My birthday was on thanksgiving and I can't think of a better way I could have spent it.

Big thanks to Taylor for all the help and updates as well as Julian. If anyone else is hunting FHL elk this year or wants advice for the future feel free to ask. As of today 4 of the 8 448 tags have been filled.
