Tentative TAs available for hunting 11, 14, 17, 18.

So the question for this newbie is- if you had your choice, which would you target?

For better or worse- we're committed to this weekend. Hope to see some of you out there.

wtpops I have a new Cell Number

Eleven is the best pick, but I took it off my web site because I usually see military vehicles parked there. I'm surprised that it's open. The good hog hunting in eleven is directly across the road from the entrance to TA-8. The entrance, that during the winter months, has a large mud puddle full of water along the highway. The flat stretch of eleven is directly across the road and along the Naciemiento River. It boarders the Off Limits area that is never open to hunting. One hunter can cover the entire flat area, and there is camping just outside the gate. If I were to hunt there, I would check in on Friday, camp outside the Gate, and hit it at first light.

thank you very much for that info map!

so what's the deal with FHL, checking in and getting areas? Do you get to choose your area? are all areas open to hunting open for free will access and you can change plans whenever you wish? or are the areas dictated to you by the base?

thanks for the heads hup.

FHL is by previously purchasing a hunting permit by mail, showing up at the game shack the friday before the sat hunt, then pick a single TA of those open and you must stay in that one, until you go back to the shack and change to another.
This is a military base with strict rules and ideas on how they want to run things. Do not speed, drive off road, or wander into closed zones, they will get serious with you.
IMHO, start with TAs that have water, depending on weapon choice. The pigs are nocturnal, traveling to and from the impact zones(or private ranches) and they have to have water every day. That being said, there are no secret spots, so plan on possible company.
Good luck...

The place is a combat training school, and this country is at war. That makes everything that they do there a top level of echelon, (that's speaking in military terms). It's top priority (speaking in civilian terms) Anyway, in spite of the fact that our way of life depends on the success of their mission, we all have a lot of fun hunting and talking about hunting. The guards at the main gate were the first to tell me about the large boar taken in 29 this morning, and it was shot with black powder.

In my previous post about camping outside the back gate, I forgot to mention that the Los Padres National Forest was closed after the fire last summer, so don't use one of the pull offs for anything. Ponderosa NF Camp Ground is about 1 mile from the rear gate , and it's still open. But, stay inside the campground boundary. I know, it sounds like more strict enforcement. Also, most guys can't find the entrance to TA-11, so if you decide to go I will email the coordinates for your GPS.

Trespassing on a military reservation is a very serious offence, like, they can take us to jail and book us. So, that's why I put the UTM Grid on my maps. Also, the check station has upgraded their maps to laser jet sheets with very fine detail.
