I am acticve as well but it did not happen for me this year either. I got to say I was bummed after the visions of me stocking my cooler with elk were crushed.

My one partner called and there were only 13 active duty applicants the 6 days before the deadline. I guess they all put in for the Dec Bull.

I knew I should have put in for a cow tag.

I'm sure the numbers were down this year because they changed the requiremnts. This year you had to have your FHL permit to apply for the elk hunts.

Exactly. That's why we all thought we had a better chance this year. I figured ONE of us would have drawn.

Quite a few guys didn't want to pay the permit fee up front. I paid for a year that I won't use. That torques me off.

Mikey said the same thing. He had called the office and they said there were hardly any apps. I told Mikey to go for a cow tag this year but he was set on another Bull. Just have to wait for another 16 months

Making a person buy the hunt permit and them not using it if they don't draw is BS. FHL should refund those permits. Call or email the base commander and complain.

If I were in California or if I were able to get there for an Elk hunt I would've bought the year pass. It's only $35 for me. There is no way I could make it out there for a hunt. I'm in Virginia now but I still follow what's happening out there. I really enjoyed hunting at FHL and look forward to getting back someday.

The point is, you had to buy the permit in order to enter the military elk draw. MWR sticks it to the active and retired guys. The civilians don't pay unless they get drawn. Hell, the state processing fee is only $8.

I live about 7 hours away, its not on my short list of weekend hunting spots.

Oh I didn't know that the civilians didn't have to buy the permit to apply for the hunt. And MWR wonders why their programs don't make money and they are losing money. I'm sure the base CO knows what's happening beauase he hunts out there. Mayeb it's his way of keeping the numbers down to improve his odds of getting drawn? I would be willing to be that he got drawn for one of the hunts.

Oh, I'm sure he hunts whenever and where ever he wants on a base depredation permit.

I know he gets a cut on any elk found dead, if the meats good. Been there when he's picked it up. Nothing wrong with that, its his base, but he oughta know we're a bit upset about get stiffed like this.

MWR is supposed to be for our benefit, not their total income.

I hear thru the grapevine that campground rates went up as well. I hope they upgrade that campground with all the money they bilked us out of this year.

Last year it was $10 a day for..... no showers, one broken crapper for all those campsites and by Thanksgiving, the water spigots were frozen so there was no water. I paid 10 bucks for what....a flat spot to throw down my tent?

I drew a military tag for the first period antlerless rifle hunt with no preference points other than being active duty. I was frustrated at having to pony up the $60 up front, but pretty happy now. I agree with the posters above in the assessment that the up front fees drove down the number of non local to FHL area applicants. Looking at the draw results it appears that all of the applicants are listed in order of draw, not just those who were successful or alternates. It will be interesting to see if the process is the same next year.

I'm not following you. Can you clarify?

I made (perhaps jumped to) that conclusion after looking at the number of alternated listed on each hunt. It looks like the standard was five alternates for every hunt that had more than one tag, yet a couple of the hunts with multiple tags had less than five alternates listed. My guess was that they took all of the applicants, ranked them in order of priority points and then filled in the list rather than conducting a draw. I'm sure they had no problem getting plent of applicants for he bull hunts, but for some of the others that doesn't look to be the case. It does appear that total number of applicants are down over previous years due to the up front permit requirement.

My buddy drew the November Bull hunt. He is active duty, this was his second year applying for the bull hunt and he is stoked.

Long carbine,
Your damn straight I'm happy! This is actually the third year and i was starting to sweat it out. MY hunt is in December and the XO is the one who drew the November muzzle loader hunt. He is stoked too since he tried last year. By the way the hunt we did together last year (cow hunt) was one of the best times I have had. I will never ever again give you a hard time about those fast little piggies, I chumped out on two of them over memorial day weekend. I sure miss having you around!
