Yesterday on the Outdoor Channel, they featured an Elk hunt @ FHL on the show Team Elk, sponsored by RMEF. The guy shot a 7x7 bull, but before that he shot a hog and ended the show with a decent 3x2 buck. Triple play!:smiley_green_with_e

Yeah, I saw the show. Actually it was a pretty good show, best one I seen in a while. All at FHL, pretty cool for sure.

No, it was rifle. I can't remember what month he was hunting, not sure of the year either.

There's no deer hunting going on at that time of year at FHL though, which is what is confusing. I could see if he got it with Archery as the Archery either sex elk hunt is in the middle of A-zone season. I'm going to see if I can find that video online somewhere. If I find it i'll post a link.

I looked on the Outdoor Channels website and was able to see a "teaser" of the show. But it doesn't give me the option to watch the episode. I'm sure it was a fun show to watch... but i'm confused how they could shoot an elk, a pig, and a deer with a rifle all on the same hunt. For those who watched it, could you shed some light on it?

Did they get some kind of special permission from the state to be able to take a deer with a rifle during the rifle elk hunt? Which is in December. Or did they get special permission to take a bull during the deer season?

FHL is in A-zone, and A-zone ends near the end of September. The rifle bull elk hunt is at the end of December. So the dates are conflicting. Just wondering if they may have stated in the show how they were able to go about doing this. Did they splice together footage of different hunts? Did they show other hunters on the show after elk/deer?

I believe Team Elk is replacing Elk Country Chronicles as the RMEF show. It is totally produced and controlled by RMEF now.

Doesn't mean it was all in the same trip or even month... they can add stuff together from the course of a season.

Which is a question I asked in my post after the one you quoted. Now, I haven't been able to see the whole episode, just a teaser, but the impression I got from what i've read is that it was all on the same trip. Which is why I was just asking for clarification because of the season conflicts.

The way the show was, it did appear that it was all in one trip. But I may have missed something, and it could of been and more then likely was separate trips and just edited to look like one.

I had a great 4x4 probably pushing 130 jump my string at 50 yards. Would possibly have been my best (highest scoring anyway) archery buck to date. I'll be after him again, next time I'm holding low at that distance. He sunk at LEAST 18" as soon as I released, and he had no clue I was there. Crazy.

Here's the response from Team Elk regarding the above questions.

Mel - The hunt that Rick Oncken participated in was a special elk hunting opportunity provided by Ft. Hunter Liggett Base Command in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and their fundraising efforts for wildlife habitat. It ...took place last September while the deer season was still occurring for that unit. Rick was able to purchase an over the counter deer tag and hunt during the same period that the special elk tag was good for. The special hunt did not affect the odds or opportunity for public draw hunters in any way. This was an additional add-on tag to the military quota which is allowed by California Department of Fish and Game regulations. Hope this answers your questions.

wow, hunt elk over the rut, with a rifle! I'll bet it was hotter than the surface of the sun out there.

I'll tell you what: that stinks. People put in for years (or even decades) to hunt there and the RMEF just waltzes on and hunts the rut with a gun. Hmmm. I'm less and less enamored by the program at FHL the more I hear about it. The biologist is great, but the command and the fees and the way it's administered? Particularly in light of the fact that someone high up at Ligget drew a tag two years in a row........
