FHL elk quota's

Been looking in the Fish and game digest. Anyone know why they cut a lot of the quota's on the hunts in FHL this year? I drew a 450 archery cow tag last year and they cut it from 5 to 4 this year along with some of te other hunts.

On my 2012 Bull hunt, the warden was telling me they were going to cut the tags. He said DFG said the herd size had dropped, he said there were more elk then years past. He didn't know how they did the survey but cuts tags due to low numbers, they even cut the entire ML tag. Didn't look low when I was there, crazy.

Perhaps DFG Elk will weigh in. Numbers didn't look low to me either last year. The elk have certainly spread out on the base.

The Department works with the military on the hunt quotas. The quotas are based on the number of elk, military training, and success rates. Military operations come first on the base and then they try and allow hunting when it does not conflict with their base operations. The overall quota was reduced by roughly one tag per hunt and the muzzleloader was eliminated. They basically could not fit the muzzleloader hunt into the program with the training they have scheduled. They are trying to provide the most opportunity they can and instead of reducing other hunts more (tags or season length) they decided it was best to elimate the muzzy hunt this year. The base goes out of its way to work with the Department on these hunts and their cooperation is fully appreciated. They also want to have people successfuly so they have moved hunt seasons around in the past to try and capitalize on holidays, weekends, etc. All of this in an effort to have people be more successful. I am trying to summarize off the top of my head from my conversations with the base and unit biologist. You should also remember that for every general draw tag there is also a military tag, so there are twice as many people out for any single hunt than it states in the reg booklet. It will be a tough year on the elk with the drought in many areas and some of the coast range is just in really bad condition. Thanks for the info. Found out this morning that I drew the period 3 bull tag this year and am beyond excited to actually get a tule tag!

I actually drew it with 8 points. Actually pulled a Nevada elk tag this year as well. I'm heading out to buy a lottery ticket now!

The draw was supposed to be this afternoon. Hopefully results for the military tags will be out soon. Good luck to you (unless you put in for 448 - then of course good luck after they draw my name.)

Yea, I put in for 448, hopefully we'll both get lucky on that one. I just checked the website, still just has the message about the draw being scheduled for 1400 today.
