my friend drew the Archery Cow tag and we just returned from his 9 day hunt. FHL has elk everywhere. We could have shot at bulls everyday. 25 by the river early morning and just before dark. 19 has alot of elk. i would honestly park and walk the road between 19 and 20. We seen alot of elk there. Any unit you decide to hunt, i would Early morning bugle to locate them, then move in quietly til you get in range. Area 24 also has alot of elk and some big bulls in it. we had 10 different bulls walk by us. the closest being 14 yards and the furthest 97 yards. all shooters. 22 has alot of bulls but was very noisy . You should tag out but be selective because there are bulls everywhere and you will be in them everyday. good luck and cant wait to see pics.

Thanks for the update. I will be somewhat selective, I'm looking for very nice bull, 300" being the mark for the first week.

Here's a question for you FHL experts. I know I cant be hunting in a ML area with a rifle, if i'm driving in a ML area to look for areas, what do I do with my rifle? Do I have to leave it at the hotel or can you have it in the vehicle cased, just not out hunting with it?

Last year I hunted the 448 hunt during Thanksgiving week. The wardens provided instructions that each weapon could be in the vehicle but cased, even the bow. You did not have to check in and out of each area; you were provided a schedule of days that each area was available and you could roam as you pleased. However, if an area was only bow and you were in it without a bow, that's a problem.

You can have it in the vehicle cased, just not hunting with it...I remember one time the warden check the cavity of the animal we hang for bullet damage.they know if it is shot by MZ or a rifle...

Mel...I should be around the weekend you are scouting. Please let me know if you need another set of eyes. You will need to do a little planning to properly scout the base.

I will let you know. I have a buddy of mine who wants to go depending on his schedule, but either way I will get in touch with you. Thanks for the offer!

Are you allowed to drive perimeter roads of areas that are not open? Like if I wanted to spot out area 24 can I drive the road and glass into the area?

Ok so this may be a stupid question. I know FHL is only open during the weekends, but is it open for the entire elk season or still only weekends? Cause that would change my game plans just a bit :)

The guys who draw elk tags get to hunt the entire time, including weekdays. My wife and I have cow tags and our hunt is 9 straight days.

Cool, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure. Keep it up, and keep us informed. Good luck.

I was there for the cow hunt and I saw several large bulls, One I would dare say was a 8x8. I saw several othere 7x7's and 6x6's and of course lots of spikes. There are lots and lots of big bulls there they just need to let you into the areas where they are. Good luck and be ready for a hard hunt

Do you remember what areas they were in? I have no problem hunting hard, it makes the success just that much sweeter.
