FHL is a military training base that is very busy training soldiers prior to their (our) deployments. It is not "our" public land. It's a great deal and opportunity when available...
You dont have to tell me that bro I'm a 14 year vet till my car accident while on duty.. But I still love to Hunt. I'm just putting things into words. It still was land donated for public hunting. I'm army all the way, but now I'm a retired medical vet that enjoy spending time in the outdoors. And so those alot of other vets and public alike.
bought annual pass for myself and my dad last year but didn't make it out there one day. the fire and the area closures interrupted most of our plans. i guess i'll stay out this year...
My take at this point is that, it seems like they open the same few TA's every weekend and that because of all the training for deployment going on that those same old spots are pretty dry. So I will sit this year out except maybe a new years hunt or something just to meet and greet. The good news is that in maybe a year or two when it's not so busy the area's that have been consistantly closed for so long will be a good bet. Until then though, I'll leave the solderin to the soldiers and find some quieter places to hunt. I look at it as sort of a crop rotation kind of thing.
Yeah it's kind of hit or miss over there. I'm active duty so it's a good deal for me ($35). I just like getting out there, I can camp and if I need anything the PX is there. I have a room reserved for the first 2 weekends of the deer season this year. I sure hope they are open. Actually I talked to somebody out there, about a week ago, and he said they will or should be back to "normal" ops starting in July.
