I'm hitting it tomorrow.

Will report back afterwards...

Least it sounds like it won't be too crowded for me!

BTW for anyone interested, I overlayed one of Jesse's maps on google earth and it seems to match up pretty well and give a decent idea of the topography. Will post it up here when I'm done using it this weekend. The restricted area on it has been shrunk slightly but the roads and creeks line up pretty well...

If anyone has any tips for areas to look at this weekend up there I'm all ears as well. Using this weekend mostly as a scouting/learning trip but always open to advice from people who know better and are willing to share.

I would take TA-27 and try to jump them at Twin Valley Res. Park on Sam Jones and walk in on the road East of the Reservoir. You will be looking down on it.

Well any luck?

Tough conditions this past weekend with the moon at full and the hot weather.

No unfortunately. Was at Twin Valley Reservoir at Sunrise, and set up there from about 4 until 7:20 and nothing seen. My guess is that they're pretty nocturnal right now... did see a decent amount of tracks on some roads and a few areas that looked pretty rooted up, but no pigs seen.

Might head up there again this weekend.

I'm writing up a full report and will post it up here when I get a chance.

Hello maidendeth,

No hunting trip wasted. The next time that 27 is open again you will know where to get setup. A lot depends on how early the gate code will let into Sam Jones Road. Then park as far away as you have time to walk in. Then tip-toe to the reservoir.

It's easy to catch a pig at a reservoir, but the pigs will favor El Piojo across the road in TA-24. There is more bottom land, but it's never open nowadays. When the sun peaks up over the horizon the hunt is over. Start looking for a bedding area.

You can get the gate code from the game shack. Or maybe I misunderstood what you said map. Everytime I have been the gate has either been open or I was able to open it, and we are talking 2 hours before sunrise.

There was a chain & padlock on the gate a month ago, and we had to drive all the way around to TA-19. We were not too late for deer, but I have a pig only tag.

Just thought of something: Some wise guy could have chained that gate behind him as he entered. Ha! I doubt it, because my son is a lot sharper than I am. He said that the key pad wasn't working. I seen the chain and lock.

Anyway, better mornings are coming. With rain the night before, we can pick up a fresh track and stay on it until we can grab the pig's tail.

Yeah the gate code they give you will open that combo padlock. Just ask them at the game shack.

How did you all do?

There are no pigs at FHL, you should go to Tejon instead :pig-laughing:

In all seriousness, just wating for the Junior deer hunt to end as they have some of the better areas (as they should).

This rain should get them out in the open during the day.

You will have to wait a little bit longer. after the junior hunt the elk hunters will take over. i would say the early December will be the best time.....

Yeah probably, I'll take any marginally decent TA though in the meantime. I'm also curious to see what opens up for the upland opener, and I have a backup spot of course.

Here's what I got for pics. I had a report written up in word but my computer went down and I lost it. Not gonna write the whole thing up again but figured I'd post the pics anyways.

I'd written up most of my report in a word document but after getting my computer back from getting fixed I can't find it...

Nothing too exciting to report so I'm just gonna post the pics instead of re-writing the whole report. (Sorry. I will be going back though and I promise I'll write up a report when I have something more interesting to write about.

Anyways here's what I got pics of.

Tools for the Weekend. Savage 114 in 30-06 and S&W Model 66 in .357 Magnum
IMG_3946.jpg

Found a ton of tracks but no pigs.
IMG_3972.jpg

Saw this guy across the road in another zone (Deer season had just ended anyways). Pic is taken through my binoculars so sorry it looks like crap.
IMG_3958.jpg

Set up here to look for coyote's but about 5 minutes after sitting down they started grading a road nearby which produced all kinds of noise and kinda killed the area (that's the excuse I'm sticking with)
IMG_3959.jpg

Saw a few Turkeys
IMG_3968.jpg

and a few areas that appeared to be pretty rooted up...
IMG_3974.jpg

Set up here at about 5PM and hung out until the end of shooting time at about 7:20 or so. Had seen a bunch of tracks in the area and met up with a guy who had seen a pretty fresh looking wallow down in the other end of the pond (maybe 150 yards to the left).
IMG_3980.jpg

IMG_3981.jpg

Only saw a whole bunch of deer and a bobcat during my whole time there though. My guess is that the pigs were pretty nocturnal (was about 100 degrees or so most of the day)
IMG_3984.jpg

Hopefully the next trip produces some better results and my report doesn't disappear after I've written half of it...

Cheers.

Thanks for all the info Map! I haven't made it back up there yet but have been doing a bit of diving in the meantime.

I'm probably going to skip the bird opener as I'm not huge on fighting crowds but will definitely be keeping your tips in mind when I'm back up there.

The gate was unlocked and open when I got there a few minutes before 2 hours before sunrise. Ended up sitting in my car for a few until the clock rolled over to 4:58AM...

Is it normal that they haven't updated the website in 2-3 weeks?

I've been calling the Phone # each week to get the zones that are open but always liked looking at the webpage so I'm not scrambling to try to write down the relevant info off the answering machine...

I only just started checking their site regularly over the past few weeks so not sure if this is something that happens often or what.

Thanks
