Hello all, just found this great site! Haven't been to FHL in years and I am looking into going down there for a hunt. Anyone know how it is these days? I had great success in TA7 back then. Thanks
I am going to Vandenberg for pigs on Monday, then off to FHL on Tuesday for the late season Elk hunt. I will let you know if we see anything good when we get back
Last time to FHL I bowhunted TA 29 for the bow opener and did not see any bucks close enough for a bowshot but I did see a group of pigs, but I did'nt have a tag. Go figure...
It's always something, I was Turkey hunting and pigs ran by me last year....didn't bring any slugs with me. Now I keep a couple in my vest just in case. Thanks for the heads up on 29
707, be fore warned that many people know about FHL and hunt it regularly, so be prepared for company especially in TA 29(a primitive weapons only zone).
The base sets which TAs are open and which are closed, they have very strict enforcement of all traffic rules(watch your speed) and has a checkin policy. You pick your area and have to stick to it, until you go back to the shack and request another one. It is a very big area and takes time to learn. I have hunted it for decades and always learn something new. This time of the year, especially this week with all the rains, the pigs do not have to stick to the TAs with ponds or the river. And one last tip do not drive off pavement after the rains as you will get stuck...
Yes, TA7 is still good, but nowadays the Internet has made it a popular place. This actuall happened a couple of years ago. Another TA7 regular and my self were stalking the same pig in tall manzita. We were both too suuburn to back-off and let the other guy have the pig. Sure enough, the other guy opened fire at about 20 yards from me. I thought I was a dead man.
Nowadays, I hunt TA's 11, 14, 16, and 19. It's really beautiful county and there are pig tracks to stalk.
Back in the days when we could drive into TA29 I shot quite a few pigs there. This is another area made popular by the Internet. Hunters are supposed to wait until daylight to enter the TA, but in reality the wised-up hunters enter well ahead of day break and hike the dry river bed down to the Park. They are positioned high with binoculars well ahead of first light. That's when the pigs are moving.
A few years back, my 14 year old shot a small boar in TA29 . It's really a good place to start young hunters, and I would like to see TA29 be reserved for the ladies and kids. Dad should only back them up in that Area.
Best advice that could be said about Ligett is the TA'S depend on the time of year and the accessibility. I am a huge fan of 24, 25, 27 & 29. But alot of times, the gate to Sam Jones is closed off of Jolon. If it is, then I would only consider hunting TA 29 or I would venture to the other side. The TA'S I mentioned are also not very productive during the dry season. Make sure to check if any entry points are closed off before choosing your TA.
Thanks for the info guys! It has been about 4 years since we have been down there. We had annuals before that, we just haven't had the time to get down there from Santa Rosa the last few years. I love the country there so gonna head back down in January.
