This was an odd one....................

We took the field at 5am, in a wind driven rain storm. At about 7:30 a small sounder of pigs spilled over the knoll where we were walking by, taking us by surprise. My hunting partner shot at the lead pig from a distance of about 60 yards or so, and I belatedly got my gun up to send a few desperate rounds after running pigs without effect. All the pigs took off running at top speed from the 1st shot, and none gave any indication of being hit.

We watched in amazement as they all scattered over the horizon, and scoured the field for blood sign without success. Disheartened, we elected to walk the property for another couple of hours, and then headed for the truck.

Amazingly enough the pig my partner shot at had been hit after all, and we found her a good half mile from the initial position laying right next to the dirt road that were were walking back on. She piled up right off the road in plain view, and even had the courtesy to run towards the truck before expiring. 1/4 mile drag later, high-five's all around and off to the cleaning station.

The autopsy later revealed a blown up liver and massive internal bleeding, but she never ever gave a hint that she's taken a 50 caliber shot broadside.

Amazing.

WTG John. I had a feeling you would be chasing that storm. Hard work pays off!

Yeah - that storm was a golden opportunity. Saturday AM it was pissing down rain, and windy. There weren't too many hunters out despite the limited areas open so we got good opportunity to score without anyone crowding us. Sunday there were a lot more people, but we had our pig by then. :)

My Bass Pro Readhead brand rain pants gave up the ghost after about 2hrs of driving rain, so I got wet and stayed wet for the rest of the day. It wasn't cold, though......... and claiming the pig made me forget about the squishiness.

I called Bass Pro and complained, and they're sending me another pair, so I'm good. Unless the new pair is crap, too. FWIW - I recommend don't go cheap on rain gear like I did - it could have been a disaster.

BTW - thanks for the intel RE: Lake San Antonio and the DFG booth there. We were able to get another pig tag on the fly Saturday afternoon.

Uncle Bambi you are one determined hunter... Way to go!! Seems like every time you go to Liggett you end up scoring on a pig... Congratulations to your friend! I'm really starting to miss Liggett I'm guessing its about time I take a trip down there before you and Live2hunt end up exterminating all the pigs on public land... haha

You and I need to co-ordinate our efforts :)

When will you be going there next?

I heard they are going to be closed for another several weeks of training after this coming weekend. With the wife sick and the freezer still full, it may be after the closure before I can get back out there.

The thing is - it's not so much "determination" as the fact that I just love being out there. This trip was the 3rd time I had brought Mike out there, and it was his 1st public land pig. I was as happy for him as if I had shot one myself.

I had a great time as well, and very much look forward to hunting with you and Steve again soon.

Actually - that fits my schedule. My freezer is pretty full as well, I'm working this weekend and out of town the next. Then there's the annual April trip to Oklahoma to see old friends and hunt turkeys..................

Let's keep in touch... shoot me a PM when you decide to go and maybe we can meet up there. I truly wish that I knew who I was talking with that time when we met in the field..... I wouldn't have been so evasive in my answers. :)
