FHL pig hunt question

does anyone know how late they will let you in the gate for the campground i know the check in window closes at 7pm on friday but it doesnt say anything about the front gate thanks vern

The gate is open all night long. You can go directly to the camp ground from there.

Hey guys, i'm heading over to FHL on March 25th as well. Would like you meet up with more JHO'ers. I havn't been there in a while, when you fill out the application is it good for any weekend you want to hunt, or do you have to put a specific date down. I didn't see anything regarding a date for which you want to hunt, some i'm curious. Hope to see you guys there.

Mel - you don't need to specify a weekend. I wish I could get out to FHL,from the recent posts it sounds good but I won't be able to make a weekend trip until the end of April. Good luck out there!

Just curious, I've only hunted TA 29 and out of 5 trips, have not seen pigs only once. I just recently got a muzzleloader because the last time I was there, I had about 12 pigs at 150 yards and just had to watch them scurry away. What are the good rifle zones to try for best chance to see pigs?

TA29 is archery, muzzleloader and shotgun slugs only. With the advanced shotgun sabot technology now available, a 150 yd. shot is doable with a scoped shotgun rifled barrel. We were just back from FHL today. One of my hunting buddies shot today a pied(spotted white and black) hog at 50 yds. and the sabot round took out a huge chunk of the hog's neck muscle but missed the neck/spine bones and the hog took off and another group of hunters finally dropped the hog with a stomach shot. They claimed and took the hog. His semi-automatic rifled barrel, scoped shotgun will print 12 ga. sabot rounds on 2" groups at 100 yds. I have a semi-automatic smooth bore 12 ga. shotgun with modified choke. With 2 3/4" standard Remington slugs, it will print 3-4" groups at 100 yds. With the Viz-glo open sights, 100 yd. shots are good to go with these combo. With the advanced technology on today's muzzleloader inline rifles and streamlined muzzleloader sabot rounds, the combo is 200 yd. capable. If you use today's advanced technologies, you will get your hog. 'Nuff said.

hey larry we heard the shots and the argument but didnt know what it was about untill we talk to rochell it was a 150 lb sow and the only one taken all weekend as of 3pm when we checked out anyway we hunted 29 and 8 put in a lot of walking and glassing and seen 2 bobcats 5 cyotes alot of elk and a ton of deer but no pigs by the way does anyone know if the deer over there have shed their atlers because all the ones we seen none had horns sorry to hear about your pig larry

Larry, It sounds like the other hunters were responsible for the kill. You stated that your friend can punch two inch groups, but his shorter 50 yard shot was at the neck? This story reminds me of the most popular ponds during duck season. Someone wings a duck but the duck continues to fly several hundred yards without losing elevation until it flies over the next group of hunters and down it goes. Who's duck is it? I wasn't there but based on what I'm reading, with three groups of hunters in such a small area, and one group who could hear the "argument", your partner did not deserve this pig. I'm glad the other hunters put this pig out of her misery. Sure sounds like there is one too many people in such a large area. At least no one was injured with all of the flying bullets...

There was no argument. The other hunting party claimed that they hit the pig with the first shot until my hunting buddy pointed out the neck shot of his shotgun sabot round. My hunting buddy was not interested in claiming/counter-claiming the pig, just setting straight the record on who had made the first hit on the pig. He was not arguing or interested about the ownership. Plenty of opportunities for pigs the next time around. I was about 2 miles from my 2 hunting buddies when it happened but they related to me the story afterwards.

My hunting buddy made the 50 yd. neck shot offhand with no rest or support, with the pig facing and looking at him. The 2" groups at 100 yds. is at the range resting on the bench.

Anyway, it was a lovely, enjoyable day at FHL. Looks like it will rain Monday and Tuesday, so more greenery, tender shoots and filled wallows for the piggies. The piggies are thriving with all this wet weather. 'Nuff said.

The pigs are still out in daylight because of the cold, damp, foggy, cloud covered weather. Come March, the warm weather will keep the piggies bedded during daylight. So if you can, take advantage of this cold, foggy weather and hunt now. Easier to hike too with the backpack, shotgun/rifle and other gear during cold weather.
FHL is a real piggy sustaining area. Rivers, reservoirs, oak trees with acorns carpeting the ground in season and lots of scrub and tender shoots. 'Nuff said.

We went home Saturday afternoon. Just a day trip to FHL and had a good early dinner at Imperial China restaurant in San Luis Obispo city, one of my favorite restaurants in the central coast. We had beef with asparagus, chicken in black mushrooms, mixed vegetables with lobster sauce, fried wontons and fried battered shrimp and of course wonton soup and plain fried rice. Mmmmm.......might go back just for the dinner. That Chinese buffet in King City across from Albertsons???? is also very, very good. Even if you don't get a piggy, a good Chinese dinner makes everything settle and fit right in afterwards. God Bless.

P.S. Imperial China is open everyday but closed in the afternoon from 2-5:00PM everyday.

Larry Had the same experience with a deer in 29 last year

know how it feels kinda sucks but nothing you can do. I guess people get that desperate, next time if there is any type of dispute call FHL police that is what i would recommend.(learned that after my experience) As in my situation there was no dispute either i also pointed out my shot on the deer and it was funny to see his reaction. Quite a bit easier to tell a muzzleloader 50 cal bullet from a 12 gauge slug hole. Same thing with the sabots i believe they are 50 cal bullets also. O well im gonna shoot a bigger one this year.

Just a question for you guys that hunt these very popular areas at Liggett. I'm trying to understand why you would hunt an area that holds so many guys that unless you made a perfect "knockdown" shot, your animal could be harvested by the guy right next to you? Not to mention, it just doesn't sound safe. Calling the FHL police to decide who's animal is lying on the ground just doesn't seem like a positive hunting experience??
