I was thinking of bringing my 870 so I could open myself up to hunting the primitive areas too but I can't find a lead free slug for smoothbore shotguns anywhere. I don't have a rifled barrel, so that's my only option for shotgun. I guess I'll chance it with the one TA that is open for rifle. How many hunters are allowed in each TA?

i dont know for sure but I know for deer season opener the place is at max capacity which is 500 (thats what i heard) so 30 TA into 500 is 16 hunters pr TA.

which i think is HIGH given the sizes of the TA's.

do you have a riffled choke tube for your 870?

My 870 is a fixed full choke. My 1100 has the remchoke system and perhaps I can get a rifled choke tube in time for the hunt. If I have a rifled choke then can i use rifled slugs or must I have a rifled barrel as well? New to this slug business, as you can tell.

Rifled slugs are designed for smoothbore. Saboted slugs are designed for rifled barrels. Hevi Shot markets a lead free foster slug(for smoothbore) and Natchez sells them. Go check out their website.

Heavyshot also makes a sabot slug for rifled barrels and Remington has a all copper
sabot fro rifled barrels that will work in a rifled choke also. There is ammo for your
shotgun around if you look.

I'm gonna be staying with Deedy at Bryson Resort if anyone wants to share a cabin. She also has 2 other cabins available. $75 a night she said.

Hey guys-

Can anyone give me some info on the campground? I will be there for sure, but is there a campground AT FHL or is everyone referring to one of the nearby CG's in the Los Padres? Also, does one need a reservation for the CG at FHL (if there is one)? What, if any facilities does the CG have? You know, just the usual never-been-there-before campground questions.

Thanks in advance,

The camp grounds are first come first serve if you get there Friday you should be cool. I think it is $15 a night. When you get tot hte gate of the base (on your left off Jolon Rd) you take your first left after you check in. MAKE SURE THE DRIVER HAS HIS VEHICLE REGISTRATION!!!! No registration you cant drive in. Been there done that!

Once you get to the camp ground it is pretty much a no brainer. Just pick one and pay. No store there so bring everything you will need. There is some water and bathrooms too.

Thanks ken!!

I have registration and insurance no prob. I'll be there early Friday, and really appreciate the info. Sorry you can't make it.

That being said, I will be hosting a BBQ in my campsite Friday night, at, say 6:00. I am inviting everyone from JHO to come by and have some ribs and beans. You will know my campsite by my 78 Cherokee Chief, tan with black trim. I look forward to meeting some of you from the site and just to toot my own.....I'm a fair cook and have plenty of ribs, so BYOB and your appetite!!! All are welcome.

See you all there,

You're on Bux. I'll make sure and swing by with something to toss on the grill.

Cocktails at 5:45pm?

I hope my green ammo gets here in time. I thought we might pick some up at the SHOT show but it's not going to get here in time I think. Ordered some from Cabela's and it's sposed to be here next week some time. If not I can be a guide/filmer. I should roll in Friday mid day if I don't get out late.

TAs open this weekend are 1, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 13E.

Jesse-

What do you shoot? I could pick you up some Federal/Barnes ammo if need be. I'll be there midday Friday as well. 5:45 is just fine, and I'll provide the ribs and beans.....I have plenty, but feel free to bring your own meat if you like. Drinks are BYOB. Looking forward to meeting new friends. Hopefully my dad can make it with me.

See Y'all There,

Little help here (once again)-

Can anyone tell me about how long it takes for FHL to process applications? I sent mine in early last week and have not gotten a confirmation email yet. I know it says allow 10 days, but has anyone had experience with it taking that long or longer? If I don't recieve my email confirmation, I suppose there is no point in driving down this weekend.........

Also, supposing all goes well, does FHL have a rifle range? I have new Federal/Barnes ammo for my 30.06 and would really like to squeeze off a shot or two before going out. Thanks to all in advance and don't forget to come by the CG for some ribs and beans Friday night.

They say it takes 2 weeks but some got it earlier or later. In my case, I didn't even get a confirmation but the voucher stamp was ready when I got to the window a few years ago. I don't think they let us use the Crocker range anymore so it would be better to take care it at home,IMHO.

In 2 years I have never received a confirmation e-mail and niether have my buddies but they have always had my info at the office when I showed up. I think they just process the requests and file everything else.

In the past when I was worried about it I called multiple times the week leading up to the weekend and never got an answer either on the phone or a return call but if you gave them 2 weeks you should be fine. I think they tell you 10 days just to keep people off their back.
