It doesn't look good for this weekend with only one Training area (TA-29) open on Saturday only. Will anyone be there to help me carry out my pig if I get one? We JHO guys should exchange cell phone numbers, just in case we get stuck in the mud, or need some help packing out a pig.

Hey Rick
I think you call the game shack and let them know, they maybe
ok with you going to help as long as you are not hunting.

Not sure, but worth a call.

i know they're not likely to disclose this info- but did they at all indicate that this would extend a few weeks?

There were 4 vehicles at the first gate, and 4 vehicles at the second gate during the morning hunt. I took the second gate, because the San Antonio was too high for my hip boots. With only one TA open, I was counting on more hunters to show up, so I hunted off in southwest corner hills by myself rather than risk being shot. I jumped a herd of 6 deer up there, and when I circled around to the bottom land, a herd of 15 deer ran past. All the deer were a beautiful color with light brown coats, light tan trim, and light under belly.

There were enough pig tracks to keep my interest, and some rooting, too. The deer wouldn't let me get within slug gun range when I practiced sneaking up on them, so I assume that the pigs in the chaparral were moving away from me as I walked through the area. I am thinking about switching over to archer style clothing, because the deer could see my every movement at 150 yards. Area 29 is hunted constantly all year, so these are well educated animals.

Kris, yes, I have to do something to blend into the background at TA-29. All 15 deer were staring at me at the same time with those big ears. Kind of makes me paranoid. The whole herd would move from one patch of cover to another, while I was trying to sneak up on them. Maybe they could see my blaze orange hat, or maybe my hard shell polyester vest was too noisy? Whatever it was, I have to switch over to soft quiet archery type clothing. Use a face mask, or maybe camo paint on my face?

Richard-

From my experience- movement and scent are your 2 biggest adversaries... noise being the third of the thrifecta.

i have been within 5yds of a 2 mule deer passing by me (no exageration). i stayed still and calm- and was well scented down... until it was time for a shot whic i missed two of (buck fever got the best of me:smiley_doh:).

a formed guide for deep and elk in new mexico once told me that on several occasions he's had elk and deer within 5 yds in open space... he said just stay sill and don't get in a staring contest.

fwiw- i hope that helps you.
