I plan to hunt at FHL next few weeks. I try to put together a weapon that I can hunt in all areas. I don't have any archery equipment. So I am limited to shotgun or muzzleloader.

I have a TC Encore 209x50 muzzleloader but Nancy Morris at FHL told me that my in-line muzzleloader is not a primitive weapon so I can NOT use it at TA 29 or 30.

Jessy or any of you hog hunters know what I can use? Can I use 12 gauge shotgun shooting sabots? Can I put a scope on it?

I can NOT find these information on their website at all. It's very vague on what I can use.

Thanks....

That's not right. You can use any muzzleloader. I'm going to double check just to be on the safe side... but I know a lot of people who use TC's and other inlines. There isn't anything in the regs that state inlines are prohibited. And it doesn't make any sense either because you can use a shotgun with a scope on it in those area's and shotguns can reach out to 200 yards with the right setup. Seems more like someone is making an uniformed statement.

Here is part of an email that Nancy Morris of FHL replied to my enquiry email.

We do do not consider in-line muzzleloaders as primitive weapons and therefore cannot be used in areas 29 and 30. Back-up firearms are not allowed.

Thank you for your interest in hunting at Fort Hunter Liggett.

The only thing I can think of is if she's thinking of the special draw hunts late in the season: MA hunts. But there isn't any MA hunts in Monterey county to my knowledge. In those hunts any muzzleloader can be used just as long as it has no scope attatched to it.

But there aren't any restrictions to using inline Muzzleloaders, with scopes, in TA's 29 and 30. If that were the case then they need to outlaw shotguns with scopes.

It's always been any muzzleloader but they may be reinterpreting that rule it appears. As Calijeep mentioned, even shotguns can reach out 200 yards now. THe rub is the homes on the back side of 30 complaining of shots carrying over into their land.

I'd get a definative word from CA DFG Warden Morris or Gary the Fort biologist since they are the ones you'll be dealing with if you get cited. I think Nancy Morris is Warden John's wife. I'd mention to them they need to make sure and change the rule so EVERYONE knows about it and it's clear what muzzleloaders are allowed.

I want to hunt one day during the Presidents day weekend with a 209 inline Muzzleloader, in 29 or 30. Would really appreciate the OFFICIAL take on this. In CA inlines are considered primitive. I realize that FHL has some unique rules, I hope that this is just an honest misunderstanding.

Looking forward to a fun hunt there.

I'm going to talk to a friend that lives up there and get his take on it. But I already know what he's going to say as far as being able to use it. But after I talk to him tomorrow i'll get back with you on it.

My dad used an inline last year and took a buck out of 29. We've been using them for the past few years in there. I really can't see why that lady said that other than she's mistaken.

Personally, I would like to see at least one area (29 or 30 would be good) set aside for bow only...
Last year they opened up 29 to all comers during the archery season opener and it was down right dangerous...

Hi Evlu- no problem, it's absolutely my job to make sure that we all have a really grand

time. Good to get all this ironed out in my opinion. The only surprises we need are the good ones!
By the way, if anyone has any specific questions for Liggett, now is a really good time for me to bring them up at this meeting.

Thanks guys,

I have another question for ya.

While hunting at TA29 or 30, can we carry a backup weapon like a 45 auto or something? even we only use the shotgun, muzzleloader or bow. Can we carry something for our own protection?

Thanks again, you guys are great!

Other specific questions, since you offered to ask:

1 Back up firearm; is a cap and ball revolver OK? Single shot muzzleloader pistol?

2 Is a double barreled muzzleloading rifle OK?

I've seen all of these firearms used in 29 and 30 at FHL, but between 10 different people, I've gotten 11 differnet opinions.

Thanks!

I have never heard of not using an in line muzzleloader as far as i am concerned hundreds maybe thousands have broke this rule. If they want to keep in line muzzle loaders out they should have a warden or base cop checking your weapon as you pass through the gate.
