It's a great place to hunt.

I have hunted there every Saturday for the last 5 weeks, so I will probably be there this Saturday. Expect last minute changes in available Training Areas. Last week 14 & 15 were canceled. Three weeks ago everything was canceled except TA-29, and I had to drive all the way back home to get my slug gun. They are just coming out of a real bad drought, and that was when the two main rivers and ponds were dry like a desert. Now it's slippery mud everywhere. Carry a long tow strap. Because of the drought the pig population is slightly off, but it's still a great place to hunt. The Deer are everywhere. Some areas are completely void of pig tracks and rooting, but they seem to be concentrated in certain spots rather than spread out. I have seen lion tracks recently in 29, so watch your back if you hunt that area. Last week there was a bobcat dead along the road near 25, a dead pig across the road from the tank range, and a dead coyote that tried to cross the road to get to the dead pig. About 10 Condors were on the fence near the pig, so they are having a feast. The place is a police state, so obey all the rules. Make sure that your paper work is up to date before driving all the way up here from Los Angeles.

Good luck;

Richard

Liggett is usuallly the best bet.

I haven't been in 29 since the heavy rains started, but most of the tracks were near the first gate and headed up hill towards the chaparral. The second gate down by the reservoir was ok, but only had a few tracks, mostly in the wooded section that is half way to the lake. The lake water was quite a ways into the park, and old lake bottom had tall dead weeds. Miserable stuff, but there was trails and a few pig tracks. It would be a close shot, and it's hard to move around in that thick tangled stuff. For experienced pig hunters only.

"5. Note: Gabilon road is closed from Hughes reservoir to the Demo Pit. If Hunters/Anglers are found in this area, then access to these hunting areas will be denied."

The above stipulation is for this weekend. Hope no one breaks the agreement, or we will all suffer.

No tracks, and high water crossing the Naci River. It boarders on Gablion Road, so see my above message about the stipulations for this weekend. Did we almost trip over one another while following the same pig in TA-7 a few weeks ago? Do you have a faded red Toyoda pickup?

Okay, during that weekend you were in TA-3 bow hunting. Right? The roads were really bad. It only takes a couple of days of dry weather to harden the mud like adobe. I still have some FHL mud cemented onto my wheels. If you plan to bow hunt there again send me a private email.

Richard

The weather forecast for King City is 70 degrees on Saturday and partly cloudy. Chance of rain on Sunday. Sounds like tomorrow will be a nice day for hiking with a gun.

Another Social Security Hunt

Does anyone have something to report? I couldn't get there until 6 AM on Saturday morning. My wife had her cowboy boots on, so I stayed home rather than get there on Friday afternoon to register early. That really puts a crimp in my Saturday hunting, especially when I plan to hunt my Social Security spot way back in 19. I arrived at the check station an 6 AM, sweated a very slow line, and then made the 30 minute trip. The sun was high in the eastern sky before I got into my stand. A coyote ran by at 50 yards, but I let him pass. There were pig tracks 50 feet from where I was sitting, proving that pigs generally move in a straight line regardless of whether a hill is in front of them. There is a well pronounced saddle right next to my stand, and that was the path that the coyote and deer take. There isn't a lot of sign, but enough pig tracks to keep my interest. Generally, the tracks head straight out of 20 for the small creek that runs out of Hughes. A lot of guys were trying out their four wheel drive, rather than putting their boots on the ground, which works in my favor. During mid day I walked the 2 mile stretch of creek all the way to the Naci River, and couldn't find a wallow. Just a track here and there. I didn't get to meet LAoutdoorsman. I will be back in my Social Security spot again next Saturday if it's open again.

Then about 10:00 or so i ran into some fresh sigh but my hunt/walk got "CUT" short. Can any body tell me what is wrong in this pic?

After i got back to the truck i decided to give the wife a call and see if she wanted to go to lunch, she workes about 40 min from Liggett at the Atascadaro State Mental Hospital, thay have some resident deer and turkey there. They have been unmelested for generations so they are prity tame.

I got there and decided to practice some turkey calling, Its not hard to get these birds to come in they wait for the empolyies to show up in the morrning so they can eat the bugs off the bumpers. Here are some pics they are some good looking birds.

Pops, did you cut your string with a broadhead?

Nice turkeys... there's a bunch like that over here at the Masonic Home in Fremont too. They come over to the ranch sometimes and pick through the manure piles from time to time, but they're completely off-limits. Still, fun to watch.

You got it. that is the second time i have ever done that in the field, I always carry a spair in my pack but have been expairamenting with differant diameter strings and took my spair out of the pack and forgot to put it back.

If you look at the very top of the pick you will see a chunck of bark that was knocked off the tree by the limb tip when the string let go.

Ive got a pig hunt at Tejon Ranch on th 13th-15th of this month, WOW, thats less than two weeks, and you can bet ill have my spair back in the pack.

wtpops,
how did you cut your string with the brad head?

Well when ever i stop to take a break or in this case dress down, it was getting warm, i will eather lean my bow aganist a tree or hang it from a limb and then load a arrow just incase, many times i will see somthing while resting or changing. This time i got a little careless, came from behind the bow and did not pay attention. Next thing i new my bow was on the ground and i was standing there with a dumb look on my face. :lol bashing sign:
