I never understood why guys would want to drive for 5 hours for a place to hunt but now I do.

In my first hour I woke up a hog, in brush too deep to kick into, probably wisely since I really didn't want to get charged. Then I bumped a cow elk up which I had never seen before in the wild. She wasn't but 60 yards away but sadly it wasn't the season and I didn't have a tag. Maybe something to think about putting in for this year.

Since I was there for either pigs or turkeys I found a gobbler. I stupidly ignored a friend's advice to hunt from the other parking area and stayed on the front side of the river. I suppose my calling has improved dramatically as I kept the gobbler engaged in a conversation for over an hour. But he wasn't going to cross the river and I wasn't going to wade across after him. Still very fun.

Also got a look at two big trout crossing a bar in the river. It was only a few inches deep there but these to 24 inch trout kept fighting their way across the bar then letting the current push them back and doing it again. Pretty entertaining!

I definitely will be back. Oh, area 25 was max-packed this weekend and no one saw a damn thing.

Ill be heading out there may 4th again. Im hoping to stay at the campground if its warm enough. I was calling those same toms last month but they were on the opposite end. I did wade through the water. good thing for waterproof snake boots. FYI make sure to have snake protection out there I know they are out last week I was inches from a 4ft rattlesnake just last tuesday

TonyS,

Yea man, I was up there this weekend also. I was engaged in a gobbler too, he never did come out of the bush. I didn't see any hog on this trip but did see coyote, bobcat, about 20 doe, tons of quail, oh and one 3 foot rattlesnake and a monster size jackrabbit, seriously the thing was huge. My one buddy saw one huge hog and some elk. my other two buddies had separate encounters with the same mountain lion. it was a
great weekend.

Glad to hear you got near something at FHL Tony. Definitely a great place to hunt. Next time go stay at the Hacienda on base by the mess hall and bar. It is super affordable! (like $35 a night) or close to that and it was built for The Hearst family as a hunting lodge when all this land was his private hunting grounds. Good thing for all of us he lost it to the government for not paying back taxes...

Yeah FHL can be pretty decent, and in some of the training areas the terrain is really not too bad. I was impressed by my first trip out there, saw lots of turkey, deer and a bunch of pigs + piglets, though of course I rushed the shot and missed a solid meat boar :mad-fumin-red:. Oh well, I'll be back out there pretty soon to see if I can catch up with him.

Last time I checked the Hacienda was more like almost $45-$50 a night for a room, Gibb Hall is $45 now. Hacienda is also is a bit more spartan with a shared bathroom down the hall, not like Gibb Hall with your own bathroom. Still a cool place to stay and I hear the restaurant is going to be opening back up there.

Where is Gibb Hall Jesse? Still would be hard pressed to find a room for $50 anywhere in So, Cal. With the exception of downtown Los Angeles...
