wavesfr   How did your scouting go? I heard they are doing a lot of Military stuff and the areas to hunt are limited. Was there someone at the guard shack at the entrance checking papers? Are you going opening day? Have you been opening day before? If so, what is it like?           Thanx     Fubar

Did'nt get to go yet .It's been closed last 2 weeks.Yes guard is at theb gate.As for scouting it's kinda hard. You could scout 1 area then next week it's not open.I spend alot of time there. So I know what most area's are like.Yes I've been opening day. It's pretty busy.Last year they only had 2 t/a's open. This year with alot of people not knowing about voucher's being handled mail only.I'm sure it will be hectic.I was told by them that fhl police will be there just for this reason. Also was told that there's a good posability that it will be closed on general opener. So Yes I'm going opening day if it is opened. They mostly pull smaller bucks out earlier.Around labor day closer to rut.You start seeing the bigger one's.Are you going? type atcha later wavesfr

Slugmaster   Welcome to Jesses Forum. You can call the recorded information line for Fort Hunter Liggett at 831  3863310. Listen to the whole recording. At the end you can leave a message and tell them you would like an information packet. The packet should give you all the information you need. There is also information on Jessesweb page and in this Forum from previous posts. Hunter Liggett is an active military base and allows hunting on weekends and holidays. You have to get a pass in the mail Passes are 25 dollars for a weekend or 70 dolars for the snnual.              Fubar

Your in luck!  I just returned from my national guard duty at FHL.  There is a big elk heard to the right of Sam Jones road past the intersection of Jolon road.  I also seen a forked horn shed and sign of bedding and poop at our bivouac area.  Hunting area 4 looks good too.  Let me know if you need further info.

Try emailing Jeff Cann, he is the biologist in the area.  JCann@dfg.ca.gov.  He might be able to give you some info.

Hunter Mike:  I drew an Elk tag (cow) for FHL.  I've seen the herd you mentioned.  I think that this area they are hanging out at is closed to hunting.  Its in the shooting range.  As a matter of fact, there were quite a few cows beded down not more than fifty yards from some bradleys doing maneuvers and shooting.  The herd is well over 400 at this time.  I'm thinking about trying 24 or 16, these border the closed/ off-limit areas.  On another subject, there has been talk about FHL going over to National Park Service.  There is currently legislation on a feasability study to do this.  The base has already turned over about 20 surplus buildings and some land to NPS.  I don't think we will be able to enjoy the 160,000 acres that FHL offers for hunting in the future if we dont contact our representatives and voice our concern of losing one of the most productive hunting areas avilable to the public.

Thanks Fubar.

Have you heard of the rumors about FHL becoming a National Park?  Jeff Cann (DFG biologist)  turned me on to this a few weeks back.  I know you can hunt some National Parks, but they are few and far in between.  Hopefully they dont stop hunting if they do convert over to NPS.  I will definitely call/write my reps when I get more info.  I'll let you know what  I find out.

I'm thinking about going out there in a couple of weeks.  I'll surely give a report.  Also, I hope they re-issue Elk tags to the hunters who lost their oppurtunity last year for this next season.  Yes, I was one of the unfortunate few.  I actually went out and bought a freezer to hold all that meat.  Oh well, I did manage to fill it with deer, pheasant , and ducks.  I should have bought a bigger freezer.

Well guy's I did not go yet.But maybe this weekend not sure yet.Glad to see that at least We'll get some use out of our annuals.Sucks it shut the last 2 weeks of deer season.Just when it was getting good too.I seen alot of nice bucks this year.Even some 165# 4x4's.But I guess the upside is.There was probably 50 - 60 bucks lives saved.Better chances this year huh?Maybe helped the pig population a little.Who know's we'll see? But when I go I'll report back
