Does anyone have any advice and or info for a FHL rookie. I sent in my money and app. and am hoping to go up with a buddy the weekend after Christmas. We are going in blind as the only info I can find is from posts and the website. I know it is not good protocol just to ask for info, but I do not know what else to do. Thanks for your help!

I would try and get there early afternoon on Friday and check in. You can look up the open zones the week of your trip and make plans on where you want to hunt. I have been there about a dozen times and still have not gotten a hog out of there but they are there for sure. I personally like zones 24, 25, and 9, and 10. I know they are there and I have seen guys take hogs in all those zones just not me.

You may want to do a search for "FHL" on the forum and you wil get a bunch of information. This is a popular place to hunt because it is open to the public. Remember it is NON-LEAD ammo only out there and you do not want to get caught using the leaded stuff.

Lots of pigs hag out in the closed zones and sneak out at dark into the hunting areas. Try along those boundaries in 15, 16, 9, 24 and see what you can spot.

You may also want to give FHL a call and double check that there will be general hunting available that weekend. The FHL bull elk hunt is happening that weekend, starts the 27th. I imagine that there will be general hunting open, but better double check, just in case. I know about 5 years ago a buddy had a bull tag and a bunch of us were hunting 10/13 while he was hunting elk in 15. Since it's on a weekend you're probably safe. But... still... double check. I'll be up there that weekend also to help with a elk tag to.

Thanks for the information guys. I imagine that there will be a lot of trial and error. If successful, this will be my third pig in my first 2 years of hunting. I was lucky enough to be taken on private land in Santa Maria and a ranch in Redding, so I am going to work for this one! If I come up with questions, I hope you guys do not mind if I bounce them off you. Thanks again.

Hi rgeisler,

If you are using Google Earth to study FHL before you hunt, I can pass along a KLM file of the Training Area Boundaries. You will notice that certain areas stand out as perfect hog habitat. I will attach the klm file onto a reply to my forum profile email address. No charge for JHO

Califeephuntr, skyone2no, regeiler,

Okay, I will be salmon fishing until the end of December, so all I can do is send you guys what I have completed. Fort Hunter Liggett is a big place, and it's still a work in process mapping it. Here is what I have ready to send: Training Areas 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13E, 13W, 15, 16, 24, 25, 27, 28, and 29. They are all bundled together in one KLM File, but the individual Areas can be turned On or Off by clicking the box next to each.

Here are the Training Areas that I am still working on: 2, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18, 19, 23, and 26. I hope to finish those sometime in February. I can update you later.

Let me know if you receive my email with the KLM file attached?

I'd like to jump on the bandwagon too! I love using Google Earth as an orientation tool! Helps put my USGS maps into even better perspective.

Thanks in advance to mapmaker!

BTW--in case you can't email me through the board: x_ring AT cox DOT net

Okay, check your email. I added Training Areas 10 and 19 to your file, and will update all of you guys when I complete the list. What I did was scan the Hand Out Maps for my Google Overlay before I went hunting, and they are lost somewhere in my computer. Areas 2, 11, 14, 17, 18, 23, and 26 are missing. Maybe I didn't hunt those areas?

Thanks the the help Mapmaker! We hunted Friday and Saturday. We found fresh sign in 6 and 9, but never saw any hogs. I did see a hog at the skinning shed. The guy said he got it from area 7. That place is amazing. I can't wait to go back. i have a lot to learn. It was tough weekend. Being mine and my buddy's first time there it was like the blind leading the blind, but finding fresh sign both days made us feel a little better. There are a lot of animals there. We saw elk, deer, turkey, and coyotes.

Okay Bill,

Check your email. I have two Google KLM files ready to send. One has all of the FHL Handout Maps attached (very slow to load), and the other only has the Training Area Boundaries. (for a quick peek)

At present I have been sending the faster Boundaries only file.
