Bring your pig tag and ammo, you might be lucky while scouting for your elk.

Oh and your Wabit gun. Friday is the opener.

Question for those of you in the know, can anyone just go onto the grounds at FHL when it is open? I'd like to get out there and hunt, but so far my intel is limited to the details on the internet, the maps of each training area from this site, and satellite views from google maps.

I'd like to spend at least a full weekend just out on the grounds, driving the roads, getting familiar with the area, and doing some hiking before I attempt a hunt.

Actually, I have a question too that I can't seem to get answered. Can you hunt pig there during deer season? I get that there's a deer lottery for reservation spots, but does that apply to someone who's going for pigs only?

jryoung, you have to send in your hunt permit application. It takes a couple weeks to get it processed so do it early. They hold your hunt permit at the check in window for pick up when you first go.

Check every Thursday to make sure FHL has open training areas and then you can go check in at the window. Some weekends the fort is closed or only a couple areas are open. Hunting is weekends and federal holidays only. Many here go on 3 day holiday weekends to get more bang for their buck. We usually have a NEw YEars and PResidents Day weekend hunt there.

You CANNOT just go out and hunt, you must be assigned a training area to hunt in.

wshive, you can hunt pigs all year round on the fort. Other game is when it is in season.

Thanks jesse, for the heads up.
FHL is a great spot to hunt but it has very specific rules and they expect full compliance. It is a bit of a hassle to apply ahead of time but well worth it.
Good luck to all...

After almost fainting from the heat I don't recommend that place for the opening. I started to feel light headed while standing around at the check station, so went back to the campground, only to find my tent hotter than an oven. Maybe a travel trailer setup with air conditioning and generator would be okay? While my boy and I were walking the road in TA -8 a CJ-5 Jeep with 4 guys drove up just as a scrawny forked horn ran pass between us. Those guys didn't get out of the Jeep before shooting, and we held our fire because we were still on the road. They got a deer and we didn't. Lately, we have been waiting until the First of the Year to apply for our FHL sticker. It's a great place to hunt during the winter and early spring.

So what about for going out an scouting, do you need permission? I'm going to submit my application this week. I'm assuming they want everyone accounted for at all times, can you just go to the check in station and ask to scout around the open areas and not hunt?

When you are assigned an area for when you are ready to hunt, is it entirely up to them? Can you ask for a specific area?

Initially I'm just looking to get out on the grounds and do some homework before I actually get out there an hunt.

You have to be registered and checked in to a training area to roam/ scout that area. After you leave a area you must also check out if not they might postpone that weeks training. You can get in to a training area with someone who is hunting but you will be considered a guest of the hunter and you can not leave that hunter or carrier a weapon. Liggett is about 4 hours away for me but I love it. All the training areas are different from the wooded areas in the north end to the rolling hills in the south.

This site is up dated every Thursday and it will tell you what training ares are open and they have just started to let you know what training ares might be open the next week.
The rules at FHL are simple check in and check out, stay in your training area, don't poach or shoot at anything you don't have tags for or not in season. The areas could get a little tricky to get into or find so I use a GPS and mark way points so I can find them in the early morning. I have been going for about 4 years and in 4 years I have got stuck once, helped a hunter that has got stuck, missed a shot at a pig, hunted quail, walked up on/ got walked up on lots of deer, saw elk, buffalo, coyote and turkey. What can I say I like it there.
My app. is filled out and in the mail so I will be out there soon I will let you guys know maybe we can get something going.

map, turn their azzes in if they fired from the Jeep. Get a place number and they can trace it back to the hunting permit. Cameras work the best.

Hi Jesse,

Those guys knew that they did wrong, so they probably had second thoughts about road hunting in a suburban area. I have owned two CJ5's, so I kind of live in a glass house. It sure was a lot of fun to drive around with the windshield folded down, but I wouldn't try it nowadays at a place like FHL. The temptation would be too great.
