phew! tired. i just got home. too amp'd to sleep just yet. i met a new friend up there. he informed me that i hunted the lake very inefficiently. he helped me work up a new game plan. tonight was the second time i put the new plan to work. i set up on a great spot, and hung out. i stayed super quiet, and didnt move. at 6:20...what? was that movement?!! i saw a pig heading for me! it's ears were waving as it trotted towards me. i froze. it's head went behind a stump and i NOCKED UP! for the first time at lake sonoma, i had to grab an arrow! then i see a second pig. this one was white-ish, and angling towards me. they hung up, 7 feet from a clearing. the edge of the clearing was a easy 30 yard shot. i felt my heart pumping HARD. they got nervous and angled away and to the left. quickly i texted my friend to move left.. he is like a ghost and headed them off quick. PHOOSH! the pigs pulled the classic ninja move, and simply disappeared. i moved forward 15 yards and found a great future ambush point. i can see the clearing, into the woods where the pigs hung up, and the end of the draw, should they get past me. i saw a deer moving thru the draw, and saw where he popped up. i ranged him at 25 yards. that deer taught me ALOT!

i want to thank my buddy. lessoned learned. for the record, he is the second guy i have met and befriended from this forum. both of those great guys are on my brother and mine, group NM elk tag. if we draw, we will all be psyched!

Dang Sancho. I really wasn't planning on going back up there this season but I might just have to fire the Ranger up and do it. Sounded like an exciting moment there.

congrats on the improved technique. i learn something new every time i step out into the field.

i remember when i first started hunting with my dad- he would take us on marches all over the hills looking for deer. sometimes for miles on end. but all of my closest encounters have been when i was sitting in one place for a period of time. it's good to slow down a bit and just look, spot your game- then make your move.

that's not to say it's the proper technique for all situations.

hope you get one next time.

Congrats! Hopefully I'll get the opportunity also :). I just got back from the bay area, everything looks so green up there! No crackling weeds FTW!
