Finally

Well I finally made it to CA and pretty much have my house together. Time to start looking at getting out into the wilderness a little bit. I know that the hunting isn't that great here so I am thinking about skipping it all together and trying my hand at fishing. This is something that I have never done and don't even know where to start. I want to be able to hike/camp somewhere with the wife and kids.

As soon as the season opens, try the eastern Sierra

You are actually up in the better Hunting and fishing area, for fishing start with he Ocean charters, they have all the equipment, hands on deck to help and with a little research can be very affordable.

As for fishing you are in a great location for Surf fishing/Kayak fishing/Pier Fishing and charter boats. Also Lake Casitas and Lake Castaic are not far from you. And if you are military you can hunt Vandenberg AFB.

I was looking at hunting Vandenberg and Fort Hunter Liggett.

Probably your best bet. But there is a ton of public land to explore.
