ok, here's a pic of my first bull elk
<
like i said he's not that big, but he's big enough for me. i shot him at about 7:30 in the morning on the second day of the season at exactly 28.5 yrds.we were trying to call in this very big six point that we had called in to 80 yards the previous evening, but before the big boy showed up we ended up calling in two cows that this guy was following. one of the cows busted me leaning up against a tree so my partner that was off to my right thought quik enough to put up the cow decoy and she headed right for it. then the bull came up behind her and he was perfectly broadside to me , so i gave a quiet little cow call to stop him,he looked right at me and i let him have it. he ran about 500 yds from where i shot him(back towards camp!

) so we only had to pack him about 3/4 of a mile thankfully.

I've never been.....yet.....but when I do I hope it is as big as yours. That is my dream hunt....Elk hunting in Montana. Did you have a guide? Where did you hunt? Any helpful hints for a flatlander from Missouri? I hope to go in 2006. He sure looks big to me!

Way to go, Stv!
<

I'm out to try for elk #2 in October. I'll be perfectly happy to take one that size! For someone who's only hunted deer most of his life... that first elk looked as big as an elephant when I had him on the ground. That's a plenty of meat too!

Dang... the fever is getting worse! Looking forward to Oct 15!

What does an elk that size dress out to? How much meat you get in the freezer to the cost of the hunt?

Looks a lot like my first bull. And I am just as proud of him as my 375+ gross bull from AZ last year. Maybe more so. Congratulations.

My CO 5x5 was about the size of Stv's. Here's most of the meat I took home. This is a 150qt Coleman cooler, and every package of meat is boned and trimmed (by me). I save a lot of meat that the butcher throws away, but this might give you an idea.

Not sure what it weighed, but it filled my stand-up freezer and I had to put some in a friend's freezer also... along with all the meat I gave away. It's a LOT of meat.

not sure what he dressed out to(meat should be on its way home today
<
)
we only packed out the four quartes, back straps and tenderloins. at the meat processor it weighed 204 lbs before boning out, and i also had them add 8% beef to the burger, so im not sure of the total "freezer weight" yet, but i'll let you know when it arrives. as for the cost to meat ratio, it was pretty expensive
tag w/ archery stamp and ohv sticker: approx $700
food and fuel:approx $400
meat processor: $110
plane ticket home: $150
misc. archery goota haves: $$$$$$
first bull elk: PRICELESS!!!
