Went on my first elk hunt two weeks ago in Idaho. It was quite a long drive (13 1/2 hours) by myself. This was a guided hunt as a bonus from work. So this was my first out of state hunt, first guided hunt and my first elk. Day one was more or less a bust. Did not see any elk but lots of sign and only heard one bugle in the distance. I did get with in 30 yards or so of a cow moose and two calves. That was a treat to see. Day two lots of walking up and down the hills. I did see one bull at sixty five yards out in some truly thick timber. Couldn't get close enough and did not have a shooting lane. He busted us and was long gone. It's amazing how large these animals are and how well concealed they can be and super quite in the woods. At about three in the afternoon, we did come across a nice bull 6x6 and tried to put the sneak on him. He gingerly walked off and we were trying to close the deal on this bull. Kept running into him about three times in three hours, but he always was one step ahead of us. After feeling defeated and 11 to 12 hours walking soupr was running out of energy. We were going to call it a day and started heading back to the truck. We were about 400 yards from the truck and my guide gives the signal. He asked do you see that bull. I kept looking and said no I don't. After the third time he asked me, I just gave in and said yes I do, but I actually did not. I moved ove to the side about 6 to 7 yards and I finally saw his brown throat. Couldn't see the rack. My guide said he was a different 6x6. Not sure how to get close to him with out being busted as he was already looking in our direction, my guide said I'll keep his attention on me and you run down the draw and come up on the side of him. So I dropped my pack and ran down the draw with my bow and snuck around about 80 yards and stalked him from the side. Got to with in 35 yards had a shooting lane and tried not to look at his rack and picked a spot. He turned broadside to me as he saw me. Let the arrow fly and hit a little high but still effective. He went about 70 yards and bedded down to expire. Little did we know that he turned out to be a 7x6!!! Sorry to say but I took this one out of the gene pool.
