IMG_1569.JPG Went to Vandenberg to hunt hogs and celebrate my buddies birthday. Was there for 2 days. On the first morning we spotted hogs feeding at about 800 yards away. 650 yards later put me on a hill over looking them making there way to the thick stuff. Watched them a bit to make sure there was no little ones running around and it was just the two. Made the shot. A few minutes later I got to hold my first (hopefully not my last) hog. Took her to the rod & gun club where they had amazing facilities. Had a blast up at Vandenberg. I am already planning my next trip. She weighed in at 98.4 lbs gutted at the weigh station can't wait to try my first wild pork.

Me too. It took a couple trips to get the layout of the land, and hunting them is completely differant from any animal I have tried to hunt. I am still getting the hang of it but am getting addicted to hunting them. Should get the meat back tomorrow can't wait to try my first wild hog meat.

Well done, that is a good one! Wild boar sausage is delicious, and it seems like pork and sliced apples on the grill go well together.

One of my favorite recipes: Schnitzel. Take the backstrap and cut into 1" medallions. Cover with a ziploc bag and pound with a mallet until thin. Dunk in egg and milk and dredge through Italian seasoned bread crumbs then saute' in olive oil at 375 F for 2 minutes per side.

myfriends410- Thanks for the information it sounds good, I am going to try that recipe out. I seared some of the chops in olive oil, seasoned them and had them on the barbeque they turned out really good. I was hoping to make it up there again next weekend or the weekend after, my buddy is still trying to get one, but can't the boss says I have to be in a wedding, I have my predeployment leave in June so I guess hunting will just have to wait till then. Good luck on the hunting rooster85.

Just a note: if every out-of-towner shoots a sow when they're up here there ain't gonna be any good hog hunting. (It was pretty bad a few years ago) An awful lot of sows have been killed this year; several with little piglets. That's next year's hunting, guys! Besides; the boar hogs are more challenging--usually a bit more skill is involved in killing one.
