so me my dad and my brother had been on this ranch (private) for a few weeks now. seen a ton of sign, but only happened to see a sow w/ 8 piglets, and a small boar a couple weeks ago. its about 5 pm and it was getting darker by the minute. we had been glassing across a canyon for a couple of hours. as im getting up to meet up with my brother and dad to call it a day, i see something brownish across the canyon in and out of the brush. was too far for me to find where he was once i brought up my binocluars. got a small glimpse of him twice in the span of 5 minutes. then said screw it and put my rifle up on the shooting sticks to see if i could find him in there and be ready to go if i did. welp about 15 seconds later there he was. all alone, about 400-450 yards away. about to get dark, so no chance in stalking him to get closer. not to mention this was the last day of pig season (for this ranch)

the only way i could describe it was like throwing a hail mary, it was a ways away but since it was a ways downhill also, i knew horizontal distance may have only een 250 yards or so, so i figured just hold it dead on. he was slightly quarting away, so i put the cross hairs right behind his shoulder plate.
after the shot. i could hear him squeeling instantly, found him in the scope again, just to see him rolling down the hill. ends up i had hit him exactly where i put the cross hairs, it entered right behind his shoulder and went out through his neck. actually didnt hit any of his major organs, i think i just hit that shoulder then a major artery in his neck. anyways he didnt get far, and my brother found him dead but biting down on a tree trunk. i know i can't prove to yall that it was 400-450 yards, ya gotta trust me! i know how far it was, and i guess thats all that counts eh? :)

just back into hunting after not being able to the last 10 or so years (school and then starting my own business). i've hunted dear and pronghorn, but i was real excited about getting this, my first pig after some hard hunting, and a hail mary shot. so i figured i would share it will yall.

just FYI:
rifle was a Ruger #1 in 25-06, 6x-18x burris, 115gr nosler spitzer partition

we didnt have a scale, but i would estimate about 175 lb range.

and all that was only beginning. for the next 2.5 hours we had to drag this sucker out of the bottom of the canyon to get to the road. out there in the dark of night, dragging this thing out wasnt all that fun at the time. but its a good story, and good memories.
:)

thanks.

Bobby,

The draws and ridges were littered with pig rootings. I hunted there for two weekends in a row and thought I would see a pig for sure, but my luck was not as good as yours. I spotted a pig that looks like the one in your picture, but he was on the other side of the boundary from the high rim road. It could have been the same pig or maybe his twin brother. I guess he finally came across the fence.

Bobby,

I was in TP on the Thur-Fri before the weekend you were in LGC. There was one canyon that I swear the pigs may have just been running all around me but I just can't see them. There were some fresh drag marks looks like someone just dragged a pig out of there. Maybe that's why I didn't see any.
