Last weekend I headed to FHL for the first time, and I also had 3 new pig hunters with me. I was hoping for at least a view of pigs for them and maybe get lucky. Well we started off by getting to Bryson Hesperia Resort about noon on Friday.......Thanks Deedy for all of your help and hospitality.......she sets us up with maps and her knowledge of FHL. We go check in, pick our TA for Saturday and then we head back to the resort to go view her pigs on her leased land and see if we spot/call any of her Yotes that are causing problems for the calves. Their is some beautiful country up there and we are getting the best view of it from the top of the hills. She shows us the area Dirtpoor killed his pigs and we glass until sundown. The guys get to see prime ranch land with pigs and she tests them in their hunting knowledge of tracks, behavior, etc. I think I have taught them well and they actually remember what I've told them.
The next day we wake up late.
As soon as we get to our TA and start glassing we hear shooting coming from the TA right next too us we start looking that way as we count about 8 shots, must of been a couple of pigs, we are hoping that the pigs will move our way........no such luck. After hours of glassing and walking It's about 10 am and I need some gas so I drop off all of the guys into the other truck and tell them to start driving the roads/glassing and get a feel for the TA and I'll be back in a flash. While I'm getting gas they run into a guy with a dead Boar and help him drag it to the car and load the pig into the back of a brand new 4 runner with leather seats, that truck will never be the same. Upon my return I cross into the TA we were hunting and I have this gut feeling to take this road that runs through the thick and nasty. And of course, what do I find in the road a sow with 4 piglets my gun is in the back seat and as I open the door to get my gun the pigs take off, I glass the thick stuff and see 3 black pigs that had already crossed the road and were running in high gear those were the ones I was after not the sow. Oh well just a little reminder to always be ready. I get to our meeting spot and I have 10 minutes until the guys with the other truck will be here so I hop on the radio and cell to find where they are and did they find anything. Just before I called I looked down this open area and sure enough a yote steps out on top of the ridge I flip the safety off give a quick whistle and boom my 270 (Hornady 140gr. BTSP) travels 300 yards splits the yotes spine in two (a lucky shot with the amount of wind that day) a nice size male.
We look the rest of the day for FRESH pig sign, we find some only after we switch TA's. The next morning, after Deedy set our alarm clocks for us, we get out there with plenty of time before the sun comes up. We use the GPS to locate the ridge we are going to set up on and we see nothing all morning the other group has a bit more luck and finds fresh sign that's a day or two old…now we're talking, but it's time for us San Diego people to go home and enjoy the 5 hour ride.
No pigs this hunt but 2 of the new pig hunters will be with me at Tejon the week before JHO's so at least they know what to do now.......don't slam the truck doors, watch the wind direction, stop talking, and don't step on the rattle snake. Overall a successful hunt in teaching the newbie’s what pigs are all about, and not to mention the Resort to come home to after the hunt a hot shower, peace and quiet.
I must tell everyone that if you go to FHL call Deedy and tell her your plans she is the nicest person and she has pigs on her lease....next time Sundays hunt will be on here property for pigs.
Thanks again Deedy for all of your help.
