first time elk hunt

Due to my work schedule I applied for a Dec cow tag in Co gmu 11 as this is the only time I can go. I have never hunted Elk or been in the area and would appreciate any advise as to where to go in area 11 as it is a big area.

Would I be better off going the first part of Dec. or later in the month?

I will be hunting with my son and staying in a motel at night. Would I be better off staying in Meeker or Craig?

Any helpful advise will be much appreciated.

I believe that tag is good for unit 11 and 211. If you call the blm office in Meeker and have them send you the blm maps for Rangely and one for Meeker they cover most of both units. There is alot of private land with scatterd blm squares in unit 211. from what I remember most of the public hunting grounds are in unit 11. There is also a couple of game reserves that are open for hunting you may ask about how to get info on them when you call for the maps. We stayed in Maybel when we hunted 11/211 (no hotel) if i remember right. We also hunted it the first riffle season. And talked to alot of people that said that those two unit are alot better in the late season so you may be going at the right time. I did take a cow. From what I understand 11/211 is a wintering ground
