Hi Everyone,

I'm a new user to the forum as evidenced by this being my first post, and generally I lurk and absorb information, but in this case I was hoping to crowd-source some first hand accounts of pig-hunting in the Cache Creek BLM area . I've been searching the forums for any relevant information and while there seem to be a lot of threads regarding the area and hogs, some of the information is old and much of it vague. I understand that no-one wants to give up their prized hunting spot, and I wouldn't want to either, basically what I'm hoping to get is a good starting point to work from.

The plan is for a buddy and I to go backpacking through the area next weekend, scouting along as we go, find some place to set up camp for the night, and then scout some more in the morning and head back out before it gets too late. It's obviously a large swath of land, and with that in mind I'm hoping someone with experience can point us in a general direction that might give us some sort of luck at seeing game. Nothing is guaranteed and I don't want anyone to do all the work for me, but I would like to make the most of my time out there without stumbling through brush that never has or will have game running through. So far I'm thinking starting out at the cowboy camp trailhead on 16 and pushing out on the loop east and possibly south trying to avoid working into private land and working out past the traffic of the trail.

Any information would be ultra-helpful in this situation and thanks in advance.

Been there once. Went to cowboy camp crossed the creek headed up and over the first ridge. Saw some deer, two big bull elk and some quail. We only went in about a mile or two sorry I can't be more helpful

Too hot and dry this time of year to be scouting for hogs. Try that adventure in late October or early March.

I'm sure you're right, I don't have any expectation to see anything, but I'm bringing my .22 with me as well just in case I scare up any rabbits. Thanks for the tip Live2hunt

+1. But when you do go, try going over the second ridge to the west of cowboy camp. There are a couple watering holes over there with some sign once in a while.

Been there and done that. Hog meat turned white and smelled like the alley of Soy Cowboy on the weekend, by the time I got them back to the truck in that heat.

Being young and dumb I disregarded the very relevant advice and ventured out anyways, it was ungodly hot and supremely unwise to walk around in that heat. And surprise! Didn't see anything alive and moving during the day, I'll try again later on in the year.

Here is one for y'all to read. If y'all pay close attention to my hints, you shouldn't have any problem finding the area. Then you just have to be there at the right time and hope for a little luck. I haven't been back there since that trip so not sure what the place is like lately. I'm really showing signs of age when it comes to those backcountry adventures.
