First time to CO

My dad recently got in touch with an old friend, who happens to own a ranch in Colorado. Turns out he used to be a hunter and said we could come hunt elk on his property!

So I looked through the CO DOW website and it looks like if I want to archery hunt I can get an OTC tag. And since I'm a junior its around $100 bucks

Does this sound right or is there more restrictions to getting a nonresident archery elk tag???

Also, I heard something about a bowhunters saftey class/certificate you need in order to get archery tags in some states, is Colorado one of them?

One more thing. I plan on buying the tag through the online system. Anyone have experience with Colorados online tag sales? How was it? And I saw the deadline for limited tag applications but couldnt seem to locate when OTC tags become avaliable?

not sure how willing the land owner is to work with / help you but you may want to see if he eligable for LOP (land owner permits). They are MUCH cheaper than out of state tags and anyone he want sto put on them can hunt off of them (as far as I know, check into it forst). You would still need an out of state lic. but it may save you some green? Sounds like you've got a hell of a hook up, good luck!

Suavegato the LOP seems like more than I want to go through considering it's only $100 for me anyway.

As far as acreage I'm not exactly sure (a few thousand) but I checked out the area on Google Earth and it looks pretty good (what do I know??). It is near National Forest and not to far out of Colorado Springs.

SCK-it is that price and it really is that easy. If you want an OTC tag for archery you have to find out what unit your dads friends ranch is in and find out if they give out OTC tags in that unit. If they DONT, you need to apply for the unit, through the draw or obtain and tag through the draw, that allows someone to hunt on private land (easier to draw this tag). I can help you with that, as well as many others on here. You can try and draw elk male or female and deer. If the unit allows archery OTC tags, then you can buy them at DOW (not sure about online) up to the day before that hunting season starts. Once it starts they give no OTC tags out. In yrs past, we just drove to CO, stopped at the DOW, on thurs. or Fri. (make sure before it closes!!!) and bought bull tags over the counter, but for rifle. And i have never hunted archery, want to, but I dont know about the archery safety cert.?

I don’t think CO requires a bowhunter’s safety class but you will need to show them your CA Hunters Safety Cert. Make sure you take it to one of their offices. Once it’s verified at an office, you’ll never need to show them again (in WY you will need to bring it with you everytime). If you know the unit number where the ranch is, call the Game & Fish Dept and ask them about the tag requirements.

And enjoy your “Junior” status while it last. This will probably be one of the last times you’ll get to buy a CO Elk tag for a $100!

Thanks for the help everyone. I check the GMU map and it looks like I'll be in unit 511. Whether this is a draw unit or not I'm not sure yet. Hopefully not.

SCK-I gave you the link and told you what unlimited ment and you told us that it looks like 511. If you read, 551-is not a draw unit (unlimited/OTC, last yr at least) and you can get a either sex tag for the price of a OTC bul tag, about 525.00. Hunt bulls real hard for a few days then if you have the opportunity, settle on a big fat meat cow.
