Thought you all might be interested...the December hunt should have some better success. Contact me if you need any additional details:

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is calling on hunters to help control pig populations in northern Colusa County. In cooperation with the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), DFG has announced an additional public hunting opportunity for wild pigs on USBR-managed lands at East Park Reservoir, 20 miles west of Maxwell.

This new opportunity will allow 24 additional hunters to access USBR lands this December in an effort to control the wild pig population inhabiting the area. Marc Kenyon, DFG's Wild Pig Program Coordinator, met with USBR officials earlier this year to develop a plan to control local pig populations.

"The USBR maintains lands that are prime wild pig, deer, elk and turkey habitat, comprised of grasslands, mixed oak woodlands and riparian areas," Kenyon said. "Because there are so many pigs, they are frequently wandering onto adjacent private lands. We wanted to quickly enact control measures designed to alleviate the impacts pigs are causing there."

Wild pigs are capable of altering landscapes by their normal feeding habits, called rooting, where pigs unearth tubers, acorns and grubs with their snouts. After the pigs expose the soil, invasive weeds usually take hold, replacing native species.

"We agreed to construct pig-resistant fencing to protect native vegetation and offer a third hunting opportunity," Kenyon added. "Pig eradication was discussed, but total pig removal is logistically challenging and cost-prohibitive in these situations. At this point, controlling the population is the best we can hope for."

The new hunt is scheduled for December and will be in addition to two other hunts currently offered in April and October. The hunts are limited entry and permit-only, available to all holders of a valid California hunting license and a wild pig tag, which are available at license providers throughout the state. Hunters may apply for the two-day, muzzleloader pig hunts by mailing their information on postcards to DFG. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 27. Entry permits with maps and additional information will subsequently be mailed to successful applicants. For application details and additional information, please visit the wild pig special hunts website at DFG - Hunting - Wild Pig Management Program - Special Pig Hunts or contact Marc Kenyon, Wild Pig Program Coordinator at (916) 445-3515.

Send in your apps, and good luck!

They should allow shotgun with slug. If this is such a probelm as they describe, then why do they only allow muzzle loaders. I wish they would allow riffles, but I am sure I am asking to much here. Anyone know why it is a muzzle loader only hunt.

A Colusa County firearms ordinance on the property limits to only muzzleloaders. No rifle, no shotgun, no pistol, no archery.

We've not had much luck with folks taking pigs. We've had lots of shots, but not many hits. I'm hoping the December hunt will keep the pigs out of the wallows and more available to hunters, thus improving harvest.

One more question Marc, are there going to be any hunts opening up for people with rifles?

The first one I was working on is being held up by lawyers. I'm working on a couple more, but awaiting a state budget. This opportunity is not one of those.

The other hunts (under the SHARE Program) that I just mentioned will incorporate rifle hunts, as well as some apprentice (junior) hunts.

Archery is not allowed because local residents and county leaders wanted to ensure the pigs were dispatched quickly. They were concerned of errant shots not hitting vital organs and not passing through.

If you get drawn, we'll send you a bunch of information, including parking and camping areas. The area is walk-on only (accessibly from the south), and you can hunt pretty much the entire "finger" in the above picture. The pigs generally hang around in the riparian area (green area in the photo on the West inlet) during the day. It just so happens that this is also the closed zone because of the proximity to nearby residences. So, just sit on the main ridge road and wait for them to cross over to the bedding area in the early morning and late evening.

They also hang out at the end of the cove on the east side of the finger. Numerous times I had to wait for them to cross the road coming out of the Almond Orchard into the Lagoon or off the Hill into the Lagoon.

I hope to here about the draw soon.

Sorry the draw is late folks. I've been on a 2-week vacation hunting deer in Montana. Just got back on the first, and we're working on it now. I hope to have the draw completed and announcements out by the end of the week.

Good news - the October hunters took three pigs off the property. We had a bunch of no-shows, however. If you're drawn and cannot make it, please be sure to let us know ahead of time so we can back-fill your vacated slot with another interested hunter.
