Just got my January issue of "California Game and Fish" in the mail today.  There is a article on trout fishing in San Diego, with several lakes covered.

If you're talking fly fishing and other than lakes, you pretty much need to head up to northern LA.  There are a few small creeks that can be kind of fun - Piru, Sespe, Bear, Deep, Littlerock and a few others.  Nothing to compare with Montana but fun none the less.

If you want more Montana like fishing in CA you'll need to head up to the Eastern Sierras where you'll be able to find some fishing comparable to what you'd find in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.

You can pick up a CA fishing license at just about any sporting goods store or Wall/Kmart.  They're good for the calendar year so you might want to get a day license for the next couple of weeks and get your annual one after January 1.
