TOP PICKS

• LAKE BERRYESSA – The marinas and fee launches that are still open are Markley Cove and Pleasure Cove. Cappell is the only free launch site, so look for crowded conditions this summer. Pleasure Cove is also the only one that still has camping. The kokes are running from 15 to 17 inches around the Big Island and going for Sep's 3/0 dodgers in gold, watermelon and chrome starlight in combo with these dodgers. Running Uncle Larry's spinners in Hot Belly, Mad Passion and Pink tiger; Rocky Mountain Tackle spinners in purple/pink and watermelon; and gold star hoochies in blue splatter and green splatter have put limits in the box. The fish are holding from 22 to 40 feet deep. A good mix of spots, smallies and largemouth bass up to 3 pounds have been hitting in the back of coves, the narrows and in the main lake. With water temperatures already at 60 degrees in shallower spots, many bass are bedding down in 8 to 10 feet of water.

• BERKELEY – The landing is coming to life, with both the California Dawn and the Happy Hooker back from their winter ports, ready to target halibut. Capt. James Smith on the Cal Dawn reported three trips trolling for halibut since his return, the results being one to two-plus fish around.

• LAKE PARDEE – Shore fishing and trolling for trout both improved, the action for trollers now producing limits for those using flasher/'crawler combos. Shore anglers did best around the recreation area cove on Power Bait. The fish are down 5 to 15 feet. Some big bass weighed in at the marina, including a 9.5- pounder and an 8.5-pounder (no report of successful lures used).

SACRAMENTO VALLEY

AMERICAN RIVER – Anglers found spotty fishing on the American River, including for those drifting minnows on the lower end of the river for stripers. A few were taken on big streamers around Howe Avenue. It's a question of hitting the right spot. Keep moving because, if a striper is present, it is likely to bite.

FEATHER RIVER – There was a big surge of stripers up the Feather River last week, including some big fish to 30 pounds. Fish were caught from the mouth all the way to Shanghai Bend, with Beer Can Beach, Boyd's Pump, Mosquito Beach and the rapids at Shanghai Bend some of the hot spots. Best methods: jumbo minnows, Hair Raiser jigs, trolled Rebels and swimbaits.

FOLSOM LAKE – Lots of bass continue to be caught at Folsom, but most have been small. While the usual artificials have been used, such as Senkos in shallow water, drop-shotting a bit deeper, crankbaits and swimbaits, the real getters have been live bait, minnows and crawdad. A few salmon in the 16-inch class were caught between 20 and 30 feet deep on slow-rolled baby anchovies and small anchovies. Yo-Zuri pin minnows in silver and chartreuse were working, too, but not as well as bait.

RANCHO SECO LAKE – They're still catching trout, but the water is warming and fish are moving deeper. That means anglers in float tubes, pontoon boats and kayaks have the best odds by trolling woolly buggers, Kastmasters and small Rapalas.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento – Stripers were caught from Rio Vista to Verona, but it's been hit-and-miss, with some days good, as a school moves through an area, then not much the next. Bryte Beach has been one of the better spots; so has the mouth of the Feather River. Sturgeon fishing has held up well, with channels near the Interstate 5 bridge, Verona and even the mouth of the American River producing sturgeon on a regular basis.

DELTA REGION

SACRAMENTO RIVER side – Striper action picked up in the Rio Vista area. The best bite was at the end of the outgoing tides and through the change, to the first part of the incoming tide. The striper run on the Sacramento River seems to be a little late this year with not many fish in the schools. You really have to put in your time and work hard for your fish now, but using a Yo-Zuri seemed to help.
