EUREKA-Pacific halibut action busted loose, with limits on the Sea Weasel, and a fish weighing nearly 100 pounds on one of the other boats. There was good action on the flatties both north and south of Humboldt Bay. "We had limits on Thursday up near Trinidad, and then limits on Sunday just below Cape Mendocino," said Captain Gary Biasi of Full Throttle Sportfishing. The rockfish action was also wide open, but the lingcod reluctant.

SHELTER COVE-Pacific halibut went on a raging bite up at Punta Gorda, providing limit action for the boats able to fish that far out. Biggest fish of the season hit for an angler on the Bite Me on Saturday, the big flatty weighing nearly 90 pounds. Big curl tail grubs and whole mackerel on circle hooks were the top strike getters. While the boats focused on the halibut, it didn't take long to get rockfish limits for those who tried. The tractor launch service is working from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday.

LEWISTON LAKE- It's beautiful up here right now and the fishing is great! For the trollers, the Sep's small flasher with your choice of bait at the end of about a 3-foot leader is doing quite well. From shore or anchored the Lewiston Cocktail, or a pink and white egg combo is the ticket. The annual Kids Fishing Derby is July 18 from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The local Lions Club and other local businesses and DFG are hosting this event at the Pine Cove Marina and launch area. Rods and reels will be available upon request. Both bait and tackle are available at the marina although in past years Long's Drug has assisted with the bait.

NORTH COAST RIVERS

North Coast streams and rivers are regulated by low flow closures. Always call ahead to determine the condition of the river you want to fish. If not mentioned, the river is closed or no reports. The DFG's Low Flow Closure Hotline for north coast rivers is 707) 822-3164. For the Russian River and counties of Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin, call (707) 944-5533. South Central Coast streams number is (831) 649-2886. Many streams closed, and others change to artificial/barbless only on March 31 and others on April 25.

CHETCO RIVER- Cuttroats are the top bet for anglers fishing mornings and evenings with flies or small spinners.

ROGUE RIVER, Lower-Cooler temps should perk up the springer bite, with the top action before the sun hits the water.

ROGUE RIVER, Upper-More springers are moving upriver, with good action around Grants Pass for anglers back-bouncing roe and back-trolling Kwikfish and Flatfish. The top bite is early or late in the day. Trout season ropened on May 23, and fly casters have done well with salmonfly imitations.

RUSSIAN RIVER-Some shad showed up at Johnson's Beach in Guerneville, Kevin Quigley at the Outdoor Pro Shop catching six, his pal four, on 1/16-ounce heads and chartreuse twist tail grubs. Saturday's bite was tougher.

NOR CAL SALTWATER

BERKELEY-Halibut action upturned, but even better, the stripers arrived in main bay and the Mel's Reef bite was back. The Happy Hooker was just two fish short of striped bass limits on Sunday afternoon, and still had fishing time left. Some quality fish showing with bass to 17.5 pounds and halibut to 19 pounds. .

BODEGA BAY- Finally, Saturday is the opening day of bottomfishing and we'll be able to get a report out of this landing.

EMERYVILLE-Excellent action all week on halibut and then later in the week, striped bass became a top target. The fleet will continue to offer live bait potluck trips, and after Saturday, bottomfishing trips to the Farallon Islands also.

FORT BRAGG-Rockfish and lingcod action picked up with calm seas, and the minus tides made for some decent abalone rock picking. Crabbing remained slow, so the boats concentrated on bottomfish.

HALF MOON BAY-Great ocean conditions boosted the big ling bite for the boats fishing below Pigeon Point, with a 27 pounder caught on the Queen Of Hearts. The daily jackpot went to lingcod over 15 pounds every day.
