• DELTA REGION, SACRAMENTO RIVER side – Striper trolling turned on with smaller tides and influx of fish that moved in. Trolling deep divers took more fish than shallow divers from below Rio Vista down to Sherman Lake. For summer sturgeon, the night bite and tides were best. Working 25 to 48 feet deep in the waters below PGE with grass shrimp with anise scent produced oversized, shakers and keepers. This week, the afternoon outgoing and nighttime incoming tides should be the best times. These sets of tides will allow for depths ranging from 25 to 75 feet.
• SAN JOAQUIN RIVER side – Stripers moved into the Franks Tract area and anglers should be able to target them on topwater fairly easily. The bulk of the fish move in starting in September but there are already lots of smaller stripers. They will bite anchovies or other cut bait. Bigger fish take lures or live bite.
• FEATHER RIVER – Steelheading was good again in the Low Flow Section, but numerous jack salmon (immature fish that migrate a year earlier than normal) have been pesky since they cannot be kept. Anglers are not supposed to fish for them, but they're difficult to avoid. A few striped bass continued to be taken below Shanghai Bend, on Hair Raisers and Pencil Poppers.
• SACRAMENTO RIVER – Striped bass fishing perked up even around Sacramento, where fishing has been poor most of the summer. Bait, particularly bloodworms, worked best around Sacramento at spots like Sand Cove, Miller Park, and the I Street Bridge, while minnows and flies scored more fish from Knight's Landing to Ward's Landing. The catfish bite was particularly good anchovies and stinkbaits.
SIERRA LAKES/RIVERS
• CAPLES LAKE – Woodfords Station reports a slowdown but the lake was packed with anglers over the weekend. Boats lined up to the highway waiting to launch early Saturday.
• DONNER LAKE – Pressure since plants last week at public piers and the ramp took its toll on the planters. Power Bait, worms and Rooster Tails ll working. Mackinaw action has been pretty good at 100 feet for trollers using big Rapalas and AC Plugs for fish running 5 to 10 pounds.
JENKINSON LAKE (Sly Park) – A Pollock Pines girl landed a 5 1/2-pound Mack trolling a Rapala in the narrows. Shore anglers caught a few rainbows off the second dam and the peninsula using Power Bait and marshmallow-worm combos.
MOTHERLODE
AMADOR LAKE – Very light angler pressure lately. A small tournament Saturday found a tough bite. Anglers said the bass were stuffed with shad, so fish may be starting to suspend out from cover. No catfish or sunfish reports, but they should be there.
CAMANCHE LAKE – Trout trolling took an upturn for some anglers. The hot strike zone was 25 to 35 feet early, then deeper later in the day. Imitation minnow lures and dodger-nightcrawler combos worked. Rainbows to 5 pounds anchored stringers. Catfish action remained at a late-summer high, with success by shore and boat anglers. Fish to 16 pounds were weighed, the big one caught by a lake regular using mackerel.
SACRAMENTO VALLEY
AMERICAN RIVER – Flows continued to drop – the latest change taking the river down to 3,000 cfs, but striped bass continued to bite up and down the river all the way to Nimbus Dam. As usual, numbers weren't great, but also as happens every summer, a hellacious bass was caught – a 41-pounder caught behind Cal Expo on shad. Upstream, no fish that big were reported, but they continued to take bait like sardines, shad and crawdads, and lures like Pencil Poppers and soft plastic swimbaits.
FOLSOM LAKE – The lake continued to drop, a little slower now that releases to the American River have decreased. There wasn't a consistent pattern to bass fishing, but there were some nice catches up the forks and on the main body. If there was a consistent thread, it was to fish structures fairly deep and slow, with plastics in shad patterns. Trout fishing was slow again.
