TOP PICKS
• KLAMATH RIVER, Klamath Glen – Salmon fishing broke wide open in the estuary last week, and early indications are that fishery experts may have gotten it right this year. Unlike last year, a predicted good run of fall chinook may actually be realized. Trolling Kastmasters in gold and copper or spinners with an anchovy trailer in the estuary is good. Boondoggling or drifting roe between Klamath Glen and Blue Creek works.
• SILVER LAKE – Lots of fish being caught here. Canoeists and kayakers are casting toward the shore from deeper water and doing well on a worm-tipped, 1/8-ounce Kastmaster. Trollers need to get down 25 to 30 feet for the best action on a threaded nightcrawler or a Sep's brown grub. Shore anglers need to use a bigger sliding sinker and get out to deep water.
• DELTA REGION, SACRAMENTO RIVER side – Striped bass and sturgeon were on a good bite last week. Anglers should see improved water clarity this week and should see the striper bite kick back into full swing. Miners Slough, as well as stretches of the Montezuma Slough above the Montezuma Bridge, will be good for stripers while above Middle Grounds to as far up as the power lines below Rio Vista should be good for sturgeon.
• DELTA REGION, SAN JOAQUIN RIVER side – The area near Jersey Island has been holding sturgeon, as has Middle Grounds and from Pittsburg down to the mothball fleet. Anglers reported keepers, shakers and oversized sturgeon. The Sherman Lake area produced topwater stripers to 24 inches, as well as on live bait. Punching through the mats with a jig or heavy weights during the day picked up bass while the spinnerbait bite picked up early and late. Catfish and bluegill were well worth a trip to the Discovery Bay and Tracy areas. A few crappie were taken to 14 inches, but those targeting them are tight- lipped about where they are finding them. Usually you'll find them by structure, under docks and back in the sloughs.
SACRAMENTO VALLEY
• AMERICAN RIVER – Flows were down to 3,000 cfs last week, and while fishability improved, especially for fly fishermen, there really wasn't much change in the success rate. Stripers were still scattered from the mouth to Nimbus Dam – and so were the bites. Much of the pressure was centered below Paradise Beach, where an eclectic bunch soaked bait, threw flies and trolled Bombers. Upstream, bait was being soaked in holes, but most of the effort, if not the catching, was by tossing Pencil Poppers and soft plastic swimbaits.
• FOLSOM LAKE – The lake continues to drop, but there was some fair bass fishing for anglers in the very early and very late hours. While most bass continued to be caught fishing jigs and plastic worms deep and slow over rock piles and flats, there was some topwater, buzzbait and crankbait action, and even the occasional 5-pounder mixed in with the usual dinks.
• SACRAMENTO RIVER – Striped-bass fishing around Sacramento seemed to relapse last week with few positive reports. But Miller Park did produce a 15-pounder for an angler dunking anchovies. He caught a mess of small catfish as well. A better bet for getting some bites from catfish, bass and panfish has been the sloughs like Sutter and Elkhorn, and irrigation ditches There was an uptick in action from Knight's Landing to Ward's Landing, on flies and minnows.
MOTHER LODE
• AMADOR LAKE – Very light fishing pressure, with few reports coming to the Lake Amador Store. Late-summer patterns are entrenched, with bass chasing shad and top action coming from the main lake points. Catfish anglers do best with chicken liver, mackerel and anchovies.
• CAMANCHE LAKE – Fishing pressure, at least for trout, has fallen off, but the catfish stories continued to roll in, with campers on the north side catching fish to 7 pounds, and boaters also scoring whiskerfish to 6 pounds.
