TOP PICKS
DAVIS LAKE - Lots of fish 2 to 4 pounds were caught during the Portola Rotary Club's derby Saturday. Among them were some 5- and 6-pounders. Just about every bait worked, from trolling to dunking 'crawlers and Power Bait from shore. The lake is sure to become the hot one this summer.AMERICAN RIVER - Higher flows brought shad in good numbers all the way up to Sailor Bar. The trick was to be patient until they began hitting, usually late in the evening. While the best action was from Grist Mill upstream, there were flurries of activity below Paradise Beach. Higher flows brought more striped bass upriver, too. A few were caught in the lower end of the river by trollers, and some were taken on swim baits and crawfish in deeper holes.ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIR - Trout fishing was wide open for rainbows for trollers working 5 to 15 feet deep in this Yuba County lake. They used flasher-nightcrawler combos and Wedding Ring/dodgers. Some caught brown trout above Black's Ravine 30 to 35 feet down with rainbow trout Rapala. Bass action was slow.LAKE McCLURE - Good trolling for kokanee and rainbow trout in this Mariposa County spot. Bass action has been good, with rising water levels pushing the bite right next to the bank. As if to make up for last year's low levels, this lake is one of the few in the region that is actually gaining water right now, to the tune of almost a foot a day. Some great early topwater action reported from anglers using Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs, then throwing a weightless Senko or darthead worm in less than 1-foot of water and fished out to about 20 feet works the rest of the day. No crappie or catfish reports, but you can bet they are both happening.
