TOP PICKS
AMERICAN RIVER - The river closed to salmon fishing (you can't keep them, anyway) July 2 - just as the first confirmed reports of anglers catching salmon were trickling in. Shad were caught by a declining number of anglers. Fish the last hour before dark, and fish the upper river. Above Sunrise is best. Not a lot have been caught, but there are some nice striped bass cruising the river. Jumbo minnows in the lower end of the river and crawfish are best baits, but stripers will slam top-water lures early and late, as well as big Rapalas and Lucky Craft Pointers.FEATHER RIVER - Though the river closed to salmon fishing July 2, there still were anglers fishing over the Fourth of July weekend. Wardens tried to get the word out that if anglers targeted salmon, even if they planned to release them, fishing might be banned altogether. Salmon are fragile, and will easilysuccumb to the stress of being caught. With the run in such poor shape, it's important to give each adult returning salmon the best chance at survival until spawning. There were nice steelhead caught in the low-flow section on nightcrawlers and crickets. Fish the backs of holes.
