TOP PICKS

• ENGLEBRIGHT RESERVOIR – Trollers in the marina had a field day on small rainbows at 5 to 10 feet with a flasher/worm combo. Drifters worked the area from Buck's Beach on up the lake with a worm/Power Bait combo near the bottom for small planters. Launching was good everywhere, and there was a $4 day use fee, but camping is free right now with the Army Corps not charging extra until spring.

• SILVER LAKE – Limits of rainbows were caught through the ice here. One big 5 1/2-pound brown was caught. Worms worked in water 11 to 14 feet deep.

• CAPLES LAKE – John Voss at Caples Lake Resort said lots of people have been ice fishing when the weather is good. Mackinaw weighing 3 pounds were caught, and a whopper 10-pounder was caught by John Cornell from Jackson, who was fishing a bass jig through the ice.

• RUSSIAN RIVER – The river is still really low and clear near Hacienda Bridge, but fish were being caught. They seemed to be holding a little more in the lower river, according to Nick Wheeler of King's Sport & Tackle in Guerneville. They'll hold for a day, then you'll have to find them again. Smaller presentations were required in the low, clear water with stealth tactics.

• KLAMATH RIVER, Happy Camp – Steelhead fishing was excellent with good numbers of adults to 7 pounds and very few anglers. Side-drifting roe and back-trolled Hot Shots with or without a nightcrawler trailer worked.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY

• AMERICAN RIVER – Flows were low, and some anglers called for closures, at least in the areas where steelhead and a few late salmon are trying to spawn and are particularly vulnerable to snagging. However, a few fresh steelhead entered the river. It's critical if an angler is to have a chance at a hookup, to fish light line, small baits and lures, and stay out of the water.

• FEATHER RIVER – A few steelhead were caught last week, mostly small ones, plus the rare 5-pounder. Most have been caught in the Low Flow Section on nightcrawlers. A few striped bass were caught just below Shanghai Rapids on Hair Raiser Jigs.

• FOLSOM LAKE – Trout fishing perked up last week, with trollers catching mostly planter-size fish plus a few holdovers. The trick is to be willing to change a losing game – namely, if fish aren't biting on the main body, try some coves with creeks. Vary depths, because trout sometimes are close to the surface, and the next day might be down 30 to 40 feet. Try tubes, Needlefish, small Rapalas and, for salmon, rolled shad. Trout were also still being caught at the boat ramp on Power Bait and nightcrawlers. Bass fishing picked up again, although the slow approach with jigs, dart-headed and Carolina-rigged plastic worms was the best bet.

• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Sacramento – Fishing was slow. A few sturgeon were reported caught around Knight's Landing, and a few striped bass were caught on plastics and topwater lures at the mouth of the Sacramento River.

• SACRAMENTO RIVER, Redding – Trout fishing continued to be very good, with the larger fish coming from around Redding, and smaller rainbows and a few steelhead being caught farther downstream. Spin fishermen drifted Glo-Bugs, nightcrawlers and crickets, while fly fishermen used caddis, baetis and stonefly imitations.

SIERRA LAKES/RIVERS

JENKINSON LAKE (SlyPark) – Trout action slowed, but Jeff Cole at Sly Park Resort said that at least one local fisherman caught a few smallmouth. A good bass bite turning on could fill in for anglers until the reluctant rainbows get back on a decent bite.

DELTA REGION

SACRAMENTO RIVER side – Anglers working the afternoon and night tide bites found fair to good results. Morning tides will be a better bet on the Sacramento River and lower Delta. Shallow fishing in 10 to 30 feet with herring and other scents will help these diamondbacks become more aggressive.
