I like what I see here. It looks interesting to me. I would like to try this. It would get me out more. Thanks for any input. Please give me some average cost's.

hope it helps.[/b]

Thanks Dave. Great post. I will post as soon as I get started. I hunt and fish also. But, photography brings you a little closer to nature. Plus you get to keep the memories close.

I'm waiting for the new Powershot S5 IS to come down in price....I figure by Chrismas it should drop at least $100 off the $500 price tag.

The hot shoe on the S5 would be nice, but the S5 has the same lens and same size image sensor as the S3 pared with higher megapixle. That causes poorer image quality over the S3. I compared them in the local camera store and the difference in image quality is noticeable. I picked up an S3 for $289 when the release of the S5's dropped the prices of the remaining S3's. I am very happy with it's image quality and 48x combined zoom, and it will be easier to carry in my hunting pack than the DSLR.

Skeeter..how much difference is the image quality between the two? I wanted the S3, but would like to be able to enlarge photos above 11x14 so I was thinking the 8MP S5 would be the better option...??

Thanks

My friend at the camera store showed me a picture taken with each camera. There was noticeable more grain in the S5 picture. It wasn't a tremendous difference, but you could see a difference. I wanted the hotshoe on the S5, but I could not see paying $200 more for a hot shoe and a poorer image quality.

I was lookin' at the Kodak P712 at Sam's Club. It was around $300 bucks which is the cheapest I've seen it. Pretty nice camera for the money with 7 MP and 12x zoom. Lot of features.....the Sony H7 and H9 are nice too.

quack_head: I would get the nikon D40 as a beginner SLR camera...for a more compact digital camera...i'd get the Fuji f30 or f31. I don't own the d40...but i do have the fuji...it's awesome! i use it more than my bigger, more expensive professional stuff. It takes great low-light pics and the battery lasts FOREVER. Another great compact digital is the Canon sd700 or sd800. If you are really on a budget...get the Canon a550 for a little over a hundred bucks.
