Hey all, I am very new to hunting. I went out 2/2/13 and checked out Forest Route 5N30. I am trying to get some Jack Rabbit hunting done before moving up to bigger game, however, I cant seem to find anyone that is willing to point me in the right direction. I live in L.A. and dont want to travel to far for my first few hunts. Im sure that there has to be some game close by, however, if that is the only way to get some hunting done then I'm willing to travel. So I went out and traveled up the road about 1/4 mile and pulled over to a spot that seemed to be good hunting. I would have sworn that I would have seen some rabbits there, however, a few hours into the hunt all I saw was 1 bird (Species Unknown) and thought I saw a mouse. Now the place was riddled with holes, but no rabbits. I spent about 3 to 4 hours there and didn't see anything. So soon I am going to check out Forest route 5N27, which also has Drink water reservoir along the path. Hoping maybe the bunnies are closer to the water. I would appreciate any help on this matter, if anyone knows any areas that I should go to hunt some rabbits for some practice. Also after seeing some of the recipes on different websites I have changed my mind on not eating the rabbits. I think if I spend a decent amount of time on it, I could make a lovely dish. And what else is better then eating the food you hunt. Also if anyone could tell me if there is a certain time in the day that I should go out for the bunnies or it doesn't matter, also what signs should I look for other then scat and prints. Perhaps maybe images of their burrows/dens or a description of how they would look. What type of plants they eat?

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you all.

Well rabbits season end last month. Just go to the high desert for jack rabbits. Head up the 14 freeway and try off the 138.

Also, which part of the 138. I can see it is off the 14 and on the map I am looking at it shows most of the land around it is private land. I can see that it is near EAFB. Is that where you guys are speaking of? Or more near gorman area. Perhaps a exit would help out, if you are willing to let me know.

Thanks again guys.

Yes jack rabbit season is all year so is pigs and coyotes. Get a map of the area so you know where you can hunt legally. Most of the High Desert is shotgun only.

You can take it both way and you will find places to hunt. I know in the gorman area their is jacks toward Quail lake area.
