Heading to FHL, the week of Thanksgiving. Is there any butcher or meat processing plant close by the base? I've been in FHL before for deer and... but never for elk (anterless), so I prefer a pro to take care of the meat. I appreciate any overall info for this hunt.

Thanks

All I can say is that I was at FHL in July and boy I woke up every night to the buglin' tunes of the elk and let me tell you they were coming from all four corners. I know they are seen alot on the burned area where they do live training but have yet to see one while hunting. Best of luck!

I used S & D a few years ago for a Tule elk from Grizzly Island. No complaints. Makes good sausage but a bit pricey. Made my own with a kit from Cabela's.

I can vouce for Roy......A+++++

My wifes Grandfather worked for the family long ago. The Rachina's have been well known in the Salinas Vally for decades.

Roy will not do you wrong

I'll second EasyMoney's recommendation of Ralphs for sausage. However, I believe he has relocated to Paso Robles. Even closer to FHL! Good Luck.

I did this hunt a few years ago. Very enjoyable and the staff were very helpful (including DFG). Please listen to what they say during orientation. Elk are tough (even cows), there's a reason why they tell you make sure you missed if you think you did. Many of the closed areas will be opened up for you. You will have about 7 Trainig areas to hunt all to yourselves and you don't need to check in and out to go through all of them (which is usual practice for a normal hunt there). Of course, this was the policy a few years ago, they'll fill you in during the orientations.

Here's a link to the hunt I had and some pics...good luck and enjoy the hunt...

I am headed there in Dec, right after X-mas for the bull hunt. Has anyone seen any good bulls there lately? The biologist said that only a few were taken during the archery season (4 if I remember correctly), so I am pretty excited that there are a few left. This will be my first elk hunt and would appreciate any advice on this hunt. The only time I have been in FHL is at night on NVG's in a C-130 doing air drops. The last time we were there was in 2003 and there were elk all over the runway and we had to go around because of them...that is what lit my fire to start applying. My wife filled out all my apps (you probably don't want to know this but it was my 2nd year applying, so yes it does happen to people) for me while I was in Iraq and I got an email from her one day telling me that I drew the tag! Now I am busy doing my "homework" for this hunt, and have spoke with a few people who have hunted the archery season and the cow season, but have yet to run across anyone who has hunted the bull season. I will be looking to donate a large portion of my meat to a charity but am not familiar with any in the area(hunters for the hungry or something like that)...any suggestions? Thanks for any info!
