Fort hunter liggett rainbow both ends, elk bench at Hacienda, official elk tag finally at mr greenjeans office in monterey. Off for some crab on cannery row.

No word on millers tow rate, he was backing out and leaving if he could get out he said. I told elk hunter to call me and i could schlep him around san magalito loop this afternoon in 16/15. Thats all i feel safe with my pig truck, it likes to waller in da mud too.

I was heading home yesterday about 3pm on Jolon Rd. just before the Sulphur Spring Rd gate, three guys in camo clothes carrying two rifles in soft case walking. I pulled over and asked, "You guys stucked in the mud?" They admitted. My truck only has enough room for one more guy so I offered to take one of the guy back to camp to get their other truck. While on the drive back to camp, I asked the guy if they were elk hunting. Yes they were. And they walked all over TA10, saw about 15 pigs but no elk. I drop him in camp and headed back out on the road. Just before I got to the two other guys that were still walking on Jolon Road, I spotted a group of elk about 150 yards inside the fence in TA10. I pulled over to the two walking guys and ask which of them had the elk tag. Well two of the three guys had elk tags. I asked if they want to shoot an elk. The guy with the elk tag said sure, where are they? Ooops their rifles just went with the guy that I just dropped off at camp. I offered my rifle if he want to use it. He jumped in my truck and I made a u-turn back and yes the elk were still there. We drove past a small finger ridge coming down from the hills and pulled over to the side of the road out of view from the elk (some elk were bedded down and some up milling around). As we were getting my rifle out of the case for the guy, the other guy that I dropped off at camp had drove out, picked up the third guy who was still walking Jolon Rd. and pulled over right behind my truck. The guy with my rifle walked over and ask if the other also want to shoot an elk. They can shoot on three. Ooops the guy with the truck left the rifles in the RV back at camp. I said we have another rifle if you want to use it. Here they go one guy with my rifle, the second with my dad's rifle, the third guy in the truck. The two shooters hopped the fence into TA10 from Jolon Rd. The plan was for them to head up the hill 200 yards then peek over the other side of the finger ridge for 60-70 shot. We watch the two guys walked about 150 yards and saw them started loading the guns when all of sudden, BOOM! It turned out the guy with my dad's gun, after loading the rifle, he played with the safety and accidentally touched the trigger. Well the elk were only about 100 yards over the ridge. Needless to say........two guys just started walking back over the fence and handed me the rifles. The guy that accidentally pulled the trigger was trying to explain that they had a long day. At that point I realized these guys are either too warn out from all the walking in the rain, trying to dig out their stucked truck in the mud, and not really in the mood to shoot an elk anymore, or they were rookies. I stuffed the rifles back in the case and head out of there. And it was no surprise, the elk had high tailed out of there probably due to the gunshot. Oh well, I tried to help all I can but they blew it. I hope they get their elk before the season closed.

Commenting on the guy who had pig hunters bust his stalk in TA13. My buddy was there for the OCT bull hunt and had a group of quail hunters bust his stalk down in TA22 of all places. They weren't supposed to be there so the guys at the check station/hunt shack came out and got them out of there. Not sure what happened to them.

I didn't get my elk this past weekend. I saw them in Area 16 and they just looked at me a long time. They were only about 100 yards; but, of course, Area 16 was off limits. I saw and tried to stalk them in a muzzleloader and archery area, but they weren't having that. They made sure they kept their distance. On Sunday, it was raining big time in the morning. Even the good roads were bad. I hope to get one after Thanksgiving. Area 22 is open where there's a huge herd. It's only muzzleloader and archery, though. The rain is supposed to slack off by then after coming back on Thursday.

The Marine from 29 Palms got a nubbin bull today around noon in 22. They glassed it up and he put a stalk on the group. He said the elk dropped and he was movin to start guttin it when it stood back up, kind of wobbly. He then noticed 2 big boars moving in to attack/eat the elk. He put a quick shot over them just as they closed on the almost dead elk and they took off. Elk then fell over n died. That would have beem kewl to see.

About 7 elk hunters were signed in this morning. Eric, the older gentleman you helped is still here and im going to try and help him tomorrow. We knocked on his door earlier but he may have turned in early.

The yellow millers big boom tow truck was spotted on another part of fort doing a tow so he got out of 10 it appears.

Got me some fresh chowder n crabs from Monterey for supper. Om nom nom. Fort drying out now, should be good day hunting tomorrow.

95 yard shot at broadside cow. Etip blew out both lungs n clipped the heart. She ran about 60 yards n piled up. 263 lbs gutted. 4 cows down last we heard, mine area 10, 2 from 20 n no word on where for 4rth one. I cant believe the rain held off, it wad perfect day 32f to mid 50s. One muzzleloader guy in 13e had pighunters blow his stalk. They told us no general hunters would be in our elk zones n then dropped 5 pig hunters on this marine from 29 palms. Needless to say he was not happy. My hunt almost didnt happen, FHL sent me military package that told me to pick up tag at FHL. I was never received DFG elk tag. Warden Gil was real helpful in getting me a last minute temp tag.

Well Jesse you did get told that 13E and 29 we were going to let 5 other hunters in to these area. I know this because I told everyone at the briefing. Yes the game shack did send you the wrong packet but it was not their fault you did not get your Elk tag. That was DFG issue.

Ugly morning for the elk hunters at FHL. Rained all night and this morning, no elk taken today yet. 5 total elk yesterday with 5th coming right before dark in 12B. Eric tested roads in 7 and to nasty to pig hunt. One guy in ford ranger stuck in there already.

Well the Elk late Saturday night did not come from 12b it was shot in 12a. The guy got more than just a Elk that night, he also got a ticket for $1000.00 and barred 2 yrs or more from hunting.

The elk was taken in 12A, which is off limits. Only 12B is open for elk hunting. There was a herd of about 35 elk in 12A.

It appears DFG did issue me an elk tag, I just never got it at home in the mail. USPS maybe? The letter from FHL saying to pick my tag up at FHL also added to the confusion, had I not received that letter I would have known I was missing a tag and called DFG to ask WTH. Thanks again to you and warden Gil for helping sort that out and allowing me to hunt Sat with the temp tag. To all, if your are civilian and draw an elk tag with DFG you should get your tag in the mail from DFG. Military draws pick up their tags at orientation.

On the hog hunters in our elk zones, I was in and out of the orientation with Warden Gil so I missed a few chunks. The marine also didn't think any general hunters would be with us, he just happened to see it on the board when he checked in at the game shack Sat morning. Just curious why the hog hunters are allowed in the elk areas? To keep some good areas open for them?

Thanks for the correction on the 12A shooter, I was told 12B by other hunters. Is there a reason why he was allowed to keep the elk? You made it very clear about shooting out of bounds and previous cases. Did he report himself or did someone else turn him in?

Thanks for all your help too and for cleaning up the knuckleheads at FHL.

On the towing, I talked to Mike Jardine this morning, he's almost got his rig ready, should be done in a week he said. $200 a yank he said. Anybody that hunts FHL, you need this number in your phone, Mike Jardine, 805-610-6119. He's a cash only deal so carry that or expect a trip to the magic ATM money machine. I know this cuz, well, um, the sun was in my eyes and the hog was so big and the roads changed direction and um,,,,,,. I'm going to go by Fire Dept to see what they say on tow outs, I begged them 5 years ago and they said no way because of liability.

Talked to the older gentleman still here from the 3 upland birdhunter group. He got a 180 yd shot with his ML yesterday in 13E but missed the cow. He left and will be back Fri he said. Fog hampered him this morning he said.

Wanted to post a couple of photos from my buddies hunt earlier this month at FHL. This bad boy was taken out of area 22 with his smoke pole. We spent four days straight in that zone and missed a monster on the first day. Regardless he got a chance at redemption and made it count on the second chance.
I am so looking forward to my hunt this December and so far the boys from Lemoore are 2 for 2 I just hope I keep it going and get a chance at a nice bull next month. After looking at all the animals I think I have a pretty good idea on how I am going to approach this hunt. The bull to cow ratio looked extremly favorable and I just hope the bulls quit fighting as some are starting to get pretty broke up. Spotted several bulls that I would be happy to harvest I just hope I get the chance to drop the hammer next month. I also saw many pigs over the 5 days we were at FHL, I will be up there over the next month every chance I can attempting to get a pig or two along the way, and of course "observing" the elk. Those roads are no joke when they get wet, they get snotty!

Im a little worried about the 2 elk hides i have in cooler here at FHL. Any taxidermists local i can drop them off at or will they be good in cooler until sunday when im home and can drop them off there? They have been in cooler since we skinned cow sat morning, folded meat to meat. Should i salt them down?
