I told him Eric.

Tim the dad with the 2 younger cow hunters that were stuck in 10 yesterday are in 22 now on their last hunt. Tim has a local guy from Lockwood coming with D4 cat to pull his truck out of area 10. $100 an hour he quoted him. Lockwood 15 min from FHL. Ill get D4 cat mans phone number.

Glassing elk on north end of range on Jolon now. Tims son called a bit ago but they are not answering their phone now. Maybe an elk down?

Slick elk retrieval system by Aaron the marine from 29 stumps. Worked like a champ he said yestetday. Him n partner dragged their elk 1/2 mile to truck. They get the JHO Hard Core award for this week.

Aaron also said a big cat stalked him in 13E. He stopped twice to run it off his backtrail, hollering n throwing rocks. I dunno, last thing i want is a cat tailing me while i try and get a poke at an elk. 50 yards he said cat got up on him.

Thats a nice bull acido. I hope to draw a bull tag here some day. The elk hunting here looked like so much fun i couldnt hold out any longer.

Aaron said they welded up some plate and used a boat winch unit. Check out this nylon cable Warn winch on the fire dept Tahoes. FF said the nylon doesnt abraid like the metal cables.

Those sounds like the three guys I helped on Sunday evening. Tell them my story and see if they laugh or cry.

Yes, same guys. I waited for an hour for Tim or them to show up but nothing. Not sure what happened on their last walk through 22. Tim was gone when I came back. Crisp clear mornin today with no fog.

On the guy cited in 12A for his cow, other hunters told me he called the warden and told him he was in legal area 12B only when the warden got there he was in 12A which was a closed area. That may be why he was allowed to keep the meat. Most of the fort is marked pretty good but there are places, especially for the newbies with no map, for them to get turned around. 2 guys at the orientation never got the map package.

Someone said a 7th elk was taken, not sure the details yet. I'll stop by the window when I leave today and ask.

One of the military hunters shot a cow Sunday and went home without telling anyone. He called back Weds to say "Oh, by the way...." Warden is making him bring the meat back up this weekend. THey made it REAL CLEAR in the orientation about weigh in and signing out. THey were looking for his gut pile yesterday to see if his story jived. NO elk taken today yet, some of the elk hunters are back that still have tags.

Im a little worried about the 2 elk hides i have in cooler here at FHL. Any taxidermists local i can drop them off at or will they be good in cooler until sunday when im home and can drop them off there? They have been in cooler since we skinned cow sat morning, folded meat to meat. Should i salt them down?

If you haven't got them in a freezer or salted them already, I would. It's cheap insurance.

I couldn't find anywhere to freeze the hides so I dropped them off with Aaron Vanoli at Deer Creek Taxidermy. He's right before King's City on Jolon Rd so it was close. 831-214-4244. $100 each to flesh and salt them down.

Jimmy fried up some elk fritters tonight. Jimmy did them up right, that boy can flat out cook. He was helping Ron the older gentleman with a cow tag left this afternoon. THey saw a few cows under 100 yards buy couldn't get a shot off.

When I left yesterday there was 11 elk taken, last one out of area 9. There were 2 guys left who were heading out on the range to try and connect. One older guy was handgun hunting. Jimmy Rizzo was using a mouth diaphragm to mew and chirp the elk into range. He said he mixed in some cow estrus calls too. For the spot and stalk crowd, it's a bit harder hunt trying to figure out where they are headed and to get in front of the moving elk. A bit tougher hunt once the elk get shot at. Get a cow elk mouth call and practice on calling. You could also use a Primos Hoochie Momma call which is hand operated. The advantage to the mouth call is you have both hands free and there is no hand movement to tip off the searching cows.

Some said this was a hard hunt, I don't think so. Access is excellent except when it rains and even then the wardens and staff will help on the retrieving. If you do have to quarter out an elk it's not far to a road. Lots of flat land and plenty of areas that are set aside for just elk hunters. A hard hunt would be at altitude in snow chasing elk from huge valley to huge valley.

More pics from FHL.

Thanks for the correction on the 12A shooter, I was told 12B by other hunters. Is there a reason why he was allowed to keep the elk? You made it very clear about shooting out of bounds and previous cases. Did he report himself or did someone else turn him in?

Thanks for all your help too and for cleaning up the knuckleheads at FHL.

I can’t give out all the detail but yes he did turn himself in. We all sometime make mistakes and read thing the wrong way. So it is always better to turn yourself in, then getting caught. We are doing our best to keep it clean and make it a enjoyable place to Hunt. Next time you come up give me a call so i can tie that big pig up for you to shoot....

Hopefully, I will post the story of my hunt there in November. This past weekend I prepared sausages, ground meat, jerky and sandwich meat from my elk. My wife made a rump roast. They all were delectable.
