The search engine is your friend Henry. There are posts about FHL going back 10 years on this hog hunting forum, Hit the drop down "Search This Forum" link on upper right and search "FHL" and "Liggett" and you'll get enough to keep your reading all night. There is also a link pinned at the top of this forum in the Helpful Links topic with our FHL info page. Here it is http://www.jesseshunting.com/fort-hunter-liggett-fhl-hunting-fishing-info-maps

Good luck, I haven't been up there in a few months so I can't offer any current help but in those posts you'll see what areas have always been decent. Take plenty of pics too.

My boy was 14 when he shot his first boar in TA-29, and it was quite an ordeal. Kids are used to video games, so he was surprised when the pig wouldn't stay down after he had shot it 3 times. After the 3rd hit I went into the brush pile (unarmed) to flush the wounded boar out into the open again. Then, finally a 4th shot to the rear stopped the pig long enough for my boy to finish him off with a 5th shot behind the ear.

Lucky for us it was only a small boar, so I highly recommend not taking on a large pig with a 12 year if you actually want the kid to make the kill.

The secret to our success was the fact that I had hunted FHL since 1968. Liggett is one of those places where the pigs are out from first light until the sun starts to peek up over the eastern horizon. Training Area 29 is well suited for getting out there, because of the Nacimiento dry River bed. That makes it easy for kids to learn the ropes. Get high up on clay banks with binoculars to spot the pigs while they are moving. Then stalk them.

It's a piece of cake, and I hope that someday TA-29 will be limited to Junior Hunters Only.

Meant to say San Antonio River, but the same tactic applies for the Naci.

TA-29 is Shotgun or primitive weapons only, so my boy used the Rossie 20 Gauge Slug Gun. (single shot!!!) with Remington Copper Solid Sabot Slugs. Truthfully, the 20 gauge 2-3/4 - 5/8 Oz. Copper Solids were a bit much for him, so he shot wildly at the pig.

As you can see in the pic, it was a boy sized pig, and very good eating. A lot better than Safeway pork.

The reason us old timers travel the river beds is because we don't want to get run over by a Four Wheel Drive in the dark.

Like jesse and map said, do some back searching and look to TAs that have historically produced, there is a wealth of info and discussion on this.
That is not to say they are easyto hunt at FHL, quite the opposite. Areas like TA 29, because of weapons limitations limit the numbers of hunters yet are very well known.
Overall, there are lots of pigs at FHL but they do move around quite a bit. Look for places with water, game trails and where there is little to any road access. Look along the fence lines that border the TAs and the private properties, note any trails or muddy rubs, then set up for an ambush...

easymoney,

Did you get Recon Hunt up and running? It's a lot more than another boring map navigation application.

When you see me at Starbucks playing with my cell phone, I'm going over my previous hunting trips. It even checks the current weather conditions when it calculates the Ballistics for my copper 30-06 cartridge. Amazing!

Map,
Yes I did get things up and running, thanks. I just haven't gotten to all of what recon will do yet. Looks similar to a maptrails program that eastmans was marketing a few years ago, but free and with many more enhancements.

Thanks again map. The eastmans mapping software was by subscription and each map cost a buck to download or actually use, but it had some good features like the pnipoints or waypoints and was not compatable with smart phones. Isn't technology great?
