Fort Hunter Liggett

Hi I am interested in hunting Fort Hunter Liggett and I am wondering if any could give me any general info or experiences they could share with me. Thanks for any replies.

It has a nice campground and is only open on the weekends. You do need to buy a pass and it will take about 2 weeks once you send in the paperwork. The have hogs, deer, elk, turkey, and quail to hunt. If you have a 4wd that would be real helpful to navigate the roads when it is wet.

Even with 4wd and this wet season they donot recommand any individuals going to far off the main hard packed roads. If you get stuck FHL will not pull you out. King city tow service starts minimum $200 to come to leggitt to pull you out.

True about 4wd in the wet areas. I have seen a jeep with 36+ inch tires stuck in the mud. I don't think the driver could believe he was stuck in his rig but it happens.

Thanks for the replies.........This may be a stupid question but I don't have a 4WD so is it worth going out there even if I only hae a 2WD?

YES GO - I have a 2wd toyota and you just have to stay on the paths. The best thing to do is get out of your car anyways. A lot of people hunt from their cars and probably dont see much wildlife. When you go to check in they will give you a list of open areas that you can hunt. Drive in and park and get out and start walking. I only mentioned the 4WD because there are some areas that are more muddy with streams that you will need 4wd to pass but I would recommend getting out of your car and walking.

You should be okay.......just go slow and if you can buy some chains they do help.

Ok thanks guys you just answered my next question which was do you need to drive on the bad roads in order to get to the places you can hunt, but from what I am getting from what you guys are saying is that youdrive on a good road and you can hike into where you can hunt. Am I correct?

You got it. Get out and walk around. The training areas are pretty well marked on the trees with black and white numbers so it would be tough to get lost. The first few times I went I just walked theperimeter of the TA I was in to get to know the area better. During the afternoons I would go back to the check station and try and get into another area and drive around and make notes on the map they give you so if I did not see anything promising in the morning I would have another area to check out inthe evening.

In my experiece the first 2 hours and last 2 hours of the day will be the best. That is when the hogs I have seen are taken.

K thanks a lot! I have one last question about the permit (sorry for all the questions). After the two weeks has passed and I got my permit processed, do I have to go the next weekend after the paperwork has been processed or how does that work?

in a nut shell when you have the papper work back you are ok to go anytime the fort is open for hunting
